Summary

This video is an interview with the Nobel Prize laureate, discussing his reaction to winning the prize and the importance of focusing on the world's poorest people. He also talks about the collaborative nature of his work and the significance of being awarded the prize as a married couple.

Questions & Answers

Q: How did you react to winning the Nobel Prize?

After hearing the news from Stockholm, I went back to bed. It seemed like a sensible thing to do since I am not a morning person. Despite getting calls and the news spreading to India and Europe, I managed to sleep for a 40-minute interval. As a laureate, I am prepared for the day, but the surprise recognition for my work focused on the world's poorest people is truly special.

Q: Why is it important to focus on the world's poorest people?

While many people pay lip service to the welfare of all, it is not always the immediate focus of prestigious prizes like the Nobel Prize. However, I am delighted that attention was shown in this direction. It acknowledges the importance of addressing the needs of the world's poorest individuals. Although other areas of work are also important, this recognition provides encouragement for those working in this particular field. It is a prize for all the people who take real action to make a difference.

Q: What lessons can be learned from experimental studies?

One valuable lesson from experimental studies is that one cannot impose their own rationality on others. It is essential to listen to what those people can teach us. Additionally, it is important to recognize that one's own rationality may not always be reliable. We should not place too much faith in our own rationality or the rationality of others. Instead, we should all learn together about the way the world is. This mindset serves as an antidote to wishful thinking.

Q: Can you elaborate on the collaborative nature of your work?

In my experience, I have learned an enormous amount from talking to people on the ground. This includes both the individuals we work with, whose lives we study, and the people who work with them. It is a wonderful collaborative relationship where we all learn from one another. Organizations like ceremonies and foundations also play a significant role, especially those that work on a large scale with very poor people. They have been instrumental in shaping our understanding and work in this area.

Q: What makes it special to be awarded the prize as a married couple?

Being awarded the prize as a married couple is a rare occurrence, happening only the fifth time in the history of the Nobel Prize. It adds a special dimension to the recognition as it becomes a family enterprise. The collaboration between my wife and me, both working in the same field at MIT, makes the experience much more pleasant. We are able to share the joy and challenges of our work together.

Takeaways

The interview highlights the humility and gratitude of the Nobel Prize laureate upon winning the prize. It emphasizes the importance of addressing the needs of the world's poorest individuals and the value of collaborative learning. Additionally, it recognizes the significance of being awarded the prize as a married couple, creating a special and enjoyable experience.
