Nelson Mandela was a South African politician, anti-apartheid activist, and the first Black president of South Africa (1994–99). He was born on July 18, 1918, in Mvezo, South Africa, to a Thembu royal family. Nelson Mandela's early life was marked by education and an awareness of the growing political unrest in South Africa.
