Q: What is the Sampo, and what does it produce?

The Sampo is a magical artifact described as an endless font of wealth. Ilmarinen crafts a grain mill, a salt mill, and a money mill on its sides, giving it limitless productive power.

Q: Why did Väinämöinen promise Louhi the Sampo?

Louhi found Väinämöinen after he washed ashore in Pohjola and nursed him back to health. She demanded the still-unmade Sampo as payment for returning him home, so he agreed to fetch Ilmarinen, the only smith capable of forging it.

Q: How did Väinämöinen get Ilmarinen to Pohjola?

Ilmarinen refused to travel to Pohjola because it was known as a land of witches and man-eaters. Väinämöinen tricked him into climbing a giant tree and then summoned a mighty storm that carried the smith to Pohjola.

Q: How did Ilmarinen forge the Sampo?

The forge initially produced beautiful but destructive objects, including a bloodthirsty crossbow and a plow that ruined cultivated fields. Ilmarinen then summoned the winds to work the bellows and pulled the many-colored Sampo from the flames in three days.

Q: Why did Ilmarinen leave Pohjola without his promised reward?

Louhi had promised Ilmarinen her beautiful daughter’s hand if he forged the Sampo. After he succeeded, Louhi locked the artifact inside a mountain, and the promised maiden refused to marry him, forcing him to return home alone.

Q: How did Väinämöinen, Ilmarinen, and Lemminkäinen steal the Sampo?

When Louhi rejected Väinämöinen’s demand for half the Sampo’s profits, she prepared her forces for battle. Väinämöinen played his magic harp, Kantele, putting Pohjola into a deep sleep so the three men could take the Sampo and escape.

Q: What ultimately happened to the Sampo?
