The Science of Motivation: How to Get and Stay Motivated

Motivation is a crucial factor in achieving success and reaching our goals. It is the driving force that propels us forward and keeps us focused on our objectives. However, motivation is not always easy to come by, and staying motivated can be even more challenging. In this article, we will explore the science of motivation and discover how to get and stay motivated.

Motivation can be categorized into two types: intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic motivation occurs when our interest or enjoyment in an activity comes from within ourselves. This type of motivation is strongly correlated with sustained behavioral change and improved well-being because the activity itself brings pleasure. On the other hand, extrinsic motivation is when the desired outcome is separate from the activity itself, making dips in motivation more likely.

Researchers Richard Ryan and Edward Deci identified three innate psychological needs that must be satisfied to enhance self-motivation and mental health: competence, autonomy, and relatedness. When we feel competent in a behavior, our intrinsic motivation is greater. Feedback, communication, and rewards play a significant role in enhancing our sense of competence. Relatedness, on the other hand, is more relevant to extrinsic motivation. If a behavior is valued by a manager, client, or friend, we feel a sense of connectedness, leading to internalization of extrinsic motivation.

Setting goals is an essential aspect of motivation. However, it is crucial to ensure that the goals we set are neither too hard nor too easy. If a goal is too difficult or lacks a suitable reward, we may lack the drive to pursue it. On the other hand, if a goal is too easy, it may not provide the necessary challenge to keep us motivated. Finding the right balance is key to sustaining motivation.

One of the most effective strategies for getting and staying motivated is to generate momentum by consistently showing up every day. As Lao Tzu famously said, "The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." Instead of letting tasks accumulate until they feel overwhelming, taking small steps every day creates the momentum required to conquer long-term goals. Confucius also emphasized the importance of starting small, stating, "The man who moves mountains begins by carrying away small stones."

Choosing the right goals is also crucial for intrinsic motivation. When we care deeply about a goal, intrinsic motivation occurs naturally. If we don't feel connected or committed to a goal, we may rely solely on willpower, which is not sustainable in the long run. It is essential to align our goals with our values and passions to maintain long-term motivation.

Self-reflection is another powerful tool for promoting motivation. Taking care of ourselves and allowing time for self-care activities such as reading and exercise can recharge our motivation levels. Additionally, committing to self-reflection allows us to assess our progress, identify areas for improvement, and adjust our strategies accordingly.

In the realm of business, understanding the different types of growth loops can also provide valuable insights into motivation. In marketplace businesses, where supply meets demand, two types of growth loops exist. The first type, supply driving demand, occurs when the supply has a clear motivation to bring in more demand. The second type, demand driving supply, only works for marketplaces and relies on the demand's motivation to invite more supply. This can be through viral sharing or referral programs. Finally, demand driving demand is a loop where the demand itself fuels further demand.

In conclusion, motivation is a complex science that involves both intrinsic and extrinsic factors. To get and stay motivated, it is crucial to find the right balance between challenge and reward, set goals that align with our values, generate momentum through consistent action, practice self-reflection, and understand the dynamics of growth loops. By incorporating these strategies into our lives, we can unlock our full potential and achieve the success we desire.

Actionable Advice:

  1. Start small and generate momentum by consistently showing up every day. Take small steps towards your goals to create the necessary momentum for long-term success.
  2. Choose goals that align with your values and passions. Intrinsic motivation occurs naturally when you care deeply about what you're pursuing.
  3. Prioritize self-care and self-reflection. Take time for activities that recharge your motivation levels and regularly assess your progress to make necessary adjustments.
