The Science of Motivation: How to Get and Stay Motivated
Motivation plays a crucial role in our ability to achieve our goals and make positive changes in our lives. It is the driving force behind our actions, pushing us forward and helping us overcome obstacles. However, motivation is not always easy to come by, and many of us struggle to maintain it over time. In this article, we will explore the science of motivation and discuss strategies to get and stay motivated.
There are two main types of motivation: intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic motivation stems from our internal desire and enjoyment of an activity. When we genuinely love what we do, the activity itself becomes pleasurable, leading to sustained behavioral change and improved well-being. On the other hand, extrinsic motivation is driven by external rewards or outcomes separate from the activity itself. While extrinsic motivation can be effective in the short term, it may lead to fluctuations in motivation over time.
According to Richard Ryan and Edward Deci, two renowned psychologists, there are three innate psychological needs that must be satisfied to enhance self-motivation and mental health: competence, autonomy, and relatedness. When we feel competent in a particular behavior, either through feedback, communication, or rewards, our intrinsic motivation is boosted. Relatedness, on the other hand, is more relevant to extrinsic motivation. If a behavior is valued by someone we respect or have a connection with, we are more likely to internalize the extrinsic motivation.
Setting goals is another crucial aspect of motivation. However, it is essential to strike a balance between challenging and achievable goals. If a goal is too easy or does not provide a suitable reward, we may lack the drive to pursue it. On the other hand, if a goal is too challenging, it can lead to demotivation and feelings of inadequacy. Finding the right balance is key to sustaining motivation.
One of the most effective strategies to boost motivation is to start taking action. Motivation often only begins to build once we have taken the first steps and gained some momentum in our tasks. As Lao Tzu famously said, "The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." Instead of letting tasks accumulate until they feel overwhelming, the best approach is to consistently show up every day and generate the required momentum to conquer long-term goals. This strategy aligns with Confucius' wisdom: "The man who moves mountains begins by carrying away small stones."
To enhance intrinsic motivation, it is crucial to focus on goals that we genuinely care about. When we feel connected and committed to a goal, intrinsic motivation occurs naturally. On the other hand, relying solely on willpower is not sustainable in the long run. Self-reflection and self-care are also essential components of promoting motivation. Taking time for ourselves, engaging in activities we enjoy, and reflecting on our progress can help maintain motivation and prevent burnout.
