The Science of Motivation: How to Get and Stay Motivated
Motivation is a powerful force that drives us to take action and achieve our goals. Whether it's tackling a big project or making positive changes in our lives, motivation is the key to getting started and staying on track. But what exactly is motivation, and how can we harness its power to propel us forward?
There are two types of motivation: intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic motivation comes from within us and is driven by our own interests and enjoyment of an activity. When we do something we love, the activity itself brings us pleasure and satisfaction. This type of motivation is strongly correlated with sustained behavioral change and improved well-being.
On the other hand, extrinsic motivation is driven by external factors such as rewards or recognition. It's when the outcome we desire is separate from the activity itself. While extrinsic motivation can be effective in the short term, it may not be sustainable in the long run. Dips in motivation are more likely to occur when our focus is solely on the desired outcome rather than the enjoyment of the process.
According to Richard Ryan and Edward Deci, researchers in the field of motivation, there are three innate psychological needs that must be satisfied to enhance self-motivation and mental health: competence, autonomy, and relatedness. When we feel competent in a behavior, whether through feedback or rewards, our intrinsic motivation is strengthened. Relatedness, on the other hand, is more relevant to extrinsic motivation. When we feel a sense of connectedness with others who value our behavior, we are more likely to internalize and be motivated by their expectations.
Setting the right goals is crucial in maintaining motivation. Intrinsic motivation naturally occurs when we choose goals that we truly care about. If we're not committed or connected to a goal, we may rely solely on willpower, which is not sustainable in the long term. It's important to reflect on our goals and ensure that they align with our values and interests.
Another key aspect of motivation is self-reflection. Taking care of ourselves and allowing time for self-care activities such as reading and exercise is essential in promoting motivation. Additionally, dedicating time for self-reflection allows us to assess our progress, identify any obstacles, and make necessary adjustments to stay motivated.
Thinking critically is a skill that is often overlooked but is crucial in problem-solving and decision-making. The ability to think through problems and make sound decisions is invaluable. However, thinking is something that can be learned but not taught in schools.
