Types of Motivation: Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic
There are two types of motivation: intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic motivation is when our interest or enjoyment in an activity comes from within us. It is driven by a genuine passion for what we do and the pleasure we derive from it. Intrinsic motivation is strongly correlated with sustained behavioral change and improved well-being because the activity itself brings us joy and fulfillment.
On the other hand, extrinsic motivation is when the desired outcome is separate from the activity itself. It is driven by external factors such as rewards, recognition, or approval from others. While extrinsic motivation can be effective in driving behavior change, it is more likely to fluctuate as it is not inherently tied to our personal interests and enjoyment.
The Three Psychological Needs for Self-Motivation
According to Richard Ryan and Edward Deci, there are three innate psychological needs that must be satisfied to enhance self-motivation and mental health: competence, autonomy, and relatedness. Competence refers to feeling capable and skilled in a particular behavior. When we receive feedback, communication, or rewards that affirm our competence, our intrinsic motivation is strengthened.
Autonomy is the need to feel a sense of control and autonomy over our actions. When we have the freedom to choose and make decisions aligned with our values and interests, our motivation is more likely to be self-determined and sustained.
Relatedness refers to the sense of connection and belongingness with others. When our behaviors are valued and appreciated by managers, clients, or friends, we feel a sense of connectedness that can internalize our extrinsic motivation.
Setting the Right Goals and Finding Momentum
To sustain motivation, it is crucial to have a clear aim in focus. Motivation only comes once we have started a task or behavior, not before. Therefore, choosing the right goals is essential. Intrinsic motivation occurs naturally when we care about the goal and feel committed to it. If we lack commitment or connection to the goal, relying solely on willpower becomes challenging in the long run.
