What is Transfer of Learning?

Transfer of learning is the application of knowledge or skills learned in one context to a different context, from a nearby problem to a distant domain. It is the real goal of most education, yet far transfer is hard to achieve, and Barnett and Ceci's taxonomy explains why claims about it so often conflict.

Researchers distinguish near transfer, applying learning to situations similar to the training, from far transfer, applying it across domains, formats, or long delays. Barnett and Ceci argued that the literature's contradictions come from comparing incompatible studies, and proposed a taxonomy of nine dimensions covering what is transferred and how far the new context differs in knowledge domain, physical setting, time, and more. Whether transfer occurs depends heavily on where a study sits along those dimensions.

What helps transfer, on current evidence, is learning that encodes underlying structure rather than surface features: varied examples and interleaved practice that force discrimination between problem types, explanations of why methods work, and comparison across cases. Deep initial learning is the entry fee, since knowledge that was never firmly acquired cannot travel anywhere.

For self-directed learners, the practical bet is breadth of connection. Reading across domains, linking notes from different fields, and asking where else an idea applies all create the varied encoding that gives a concept more than one launching point. Transfer rarely happens by accident; it follows from how the knowledge was built.
