How Realistic Is Horizon Zero Dawn's Machine Apocalypse?

TL;DR

The Pharaoh Plague in Horizon Zero Dawn, a self-replicating machine apocalypse, may realistically take around 20 months to consume the planet, rather than the game's stated 15 months. Factors such as waste heat and the machines' temperature sensitivity limit their replication speed, making the timeline depicted in the game more plausible within these scientific constraints.

Questions & Answers

Q: What is the Pharaoh Plague in Horizon Zero Dawn?

The Pharaoh Plague is a self-replicating machine apocalypse in the game, where machines consume biomass and spread exponentially, leading to the destruction of all life on Earth.

Q: How realistic is the game's timeline for the apocalypse?

The game suggests that the Pharaoh swarm will engulf the entire planet in 15 months. However, when considering factors like waste heat and temperature sensitivity, a more realistic estimate is around 20 months.

Q: What is the role of waste heat in estimating the time frame for the apocalypse?

Waste heat generated by the machines during their replication cycle can limit their speed and prevent them from consuming all biomass too quickly. The machines would aim to keep the average temperature of the Earth below the boiling point of water to continue consuming organic material.

Q: How does Horizon Zero Dawn account for the machines' sensitivity to temperature?

In the game, the machines are shown to be sensitive to temperature, and overheating can be used as a tactic to defeat them. This sensitivity to temperature further impacts the estimated timeline for the apocalypse.

Summary & Key Takeaways

• Horizon Zero Dawn features a self-replicating machine apocalypse known as the Pharaoh Plague, which spreads by using biomass as fuel and consuming everything on Earth.

• The game's timeline suggests that the entire planet will be encompassed by the swarm of machines in 15 months.

• However, when considering factors like waste heat and the machines' sensitivity to temperature, it is estimated that the apocalypse may take around 20 months to occur.
