The Surprising Connection Between Bionic Reading and Evoked Set: How They Impact Consumer Decision Making

In a recent study, we set out to examine the effectiveness of Bionic Reading, a technique that claims to improve reading speed. After analyzing data from 2,074 testers, we were surprised to find no evidence that Bionic Reading has any positive effect on reading speed. In fact, participants read 2.6 words per minute slower on average with Bionic Reading than without. However, the difference was so small (less than 1%) that the real takeaway is that Bionic Reading has no impact on reading speed.

While Bionic Reading may not have any direct impact on reading speed, it does raise an interesting question about how our brains process information and make decisions. This brings us to the concept of Evoked Set, which refers to the set of favorable choices that come to mind when we consider purchasing a product or service.

In today's world, where the physical differentiation of products and services has become increasingly challenging, the ability to be the first brand that comes to mind is crucial in determining whether consumers choose and continue to choose a particular brand. The brand that is remembered first holds a position of strength.

According to the concept of Evoked Set, it is defined as a subset of brands that consumers are aware of within a particular product class and consider purchasing. Professor Miller (1956) suggests that humans can accurately order a stimulus set ranging from 5 to 9 items. Therefore, being part of the Evoked Set and being the first choice that comes to mind gives brands an advantage.

Being the first choice in the Evoked Set has a significant impact on consumer purchasing decisions. The brand that occupies the first position in the minds of consumers becomes a shortcut for many people. This is known as the "Double Jeopardy" law, which states that brands with high market share also have a higher number of customers. Furthermore, these customers exhibit both behavioral and attitudinal loyalty.

For market leaders, the key strategy is to minimize the number of brands in the Evoked Set. Companies like Kewpie have successfully employed this strategy. Another effective approach is to maintain the first recall position by consistently investing in extensive advertising and promotion.

But how does all of this tie back to Bionic Reading? Well, it turns out that the process of forming the Evoked Set and the first choice position starts long before consumers even step foot in a store. Consumers already have about 70-80% of their purchasing decisions made before they even enter a physical location. This phenomenon is known as the Zero Moment of Truth (ZMOT). This means that the battle for a spot in the Evoked Set and the first choice position in consumers' minds is already over before they reach the store.

So, while Bionic Reading may not improve reading speed as it claims, it does shed light on the importance of being the first brand that comes to mind. By understanding the concept of Evoked Set and the significance of the first choice position, brands can develop strategies to increase their chances of being remembered and chosen by consumers.

In conclusion, although Bionic Reading may not have the desired effect on reading speed, it does provide valuable insights into the dynamics of consumer decision-making. To leverage these insights, here are three actionable pieces of advice:

  1. Focus on brand recall: Invest in strategies and campaigns that make your brand the first choice in the minds of consumers. This could involve creative advertising, memorable branding, or innovative marketing techniques.

  2. Differentiate from competitors: In a saturated market, it's essential to stand out from the crowd. Find unique selling points that set your brand apart and make it memorable in the eyes of consumers.

  3. Understand the Zero Moment of Truth: Recognize that consumers make most of their purchasing decisions before they even enter a physical location. Take advantage of digital platforms and online presence to position your brand effectively during the ZMOT.

By incorporating these strategies and understanding the dynamics of consumer decision-making, brands can increase their chances of being remembered, chosen, and ultimately, surviving in today's competitive market.
