Easy Come, Easy Go: Understanding the Universal Law of Money & Success
Success is often portrayed as something that can be achieved overnight, but the truth is far from it. The concept of "High School Hero" Syndrome sheds light on why those who excelled in high school often struggle later in life. These individuals, who were once the captain of the football team or the class valedictorian, tend to plateau and stop learning because they believe their success is solely based on their intelligence.
When you are constantly praised for being smart, taking risks becomes intimidating. The fear of making mistakes and tarnishing the image of being intelligent cripples these individuals, preventing them from reaching their full potential. On the other hand, those who have earned their success through hardships and countless ups and downs in life have a better chance of retaining their wealth.
The so-called "overnight successes" that we often hear about are rarely as they seem. Behind every apparent instant triumph is a story of perseverance and years of hard work. Take the founder of Instacart, for example. His success with Instacart was not his first attempt at entrepreneurship. It was actually his eighth or ninth startup. Many of the unicorns in my portfolio have struggled for seven to eight years before achieving success. The big success stories that we will be hearing about in the next five to ten years are currently working tirelessly in obscurity.
This highlights the importance of patience and resilience. Ambition and aggressiveness are crucial, but they must be paired with a long-term perspective. Good things take time, and there is no shortcut to success. It requires dedication, persistence, and a willingness to stay in the game even when faced with setbacks.
Now, let's shift gears and explore the concept of Bionic Reading. In a study where we timed over 2,000 readers, we aimed to determine whether Bionic Reading actually improves reading speed. Surprisingly, the results showed no evidence of any positive effect. In fact, participants were found to read, on average, 2.6 words per minute slower with Bionic Reading than without it.
Although this may seem like a disappointing outcome, it is important to note that the difference in reading speed was minimal, less than 1%. Therefore, the real takeaway from this study is that Bionic Reading has no significant impact on reading speed. It neither improves nor hinders one's ability to read efficiently.
So, what can we learn from these two seemingly unrelated topics? The common thread lies in the importance of persistence and long-term thinking. Just as success requires time and patience, true improvements in reading speed cannot be achieved through quick fixes or gimmicks like Bionic Reading.
