What is Dual Coding?
Dual coding is Allan Paivio's theory that the mind processes information through two connected systems, one verbal and one visual, and that material encoded in both forms is remembered better than material encoded in one. Combining words with relevant images gives memory two routes back to the same idea.
Paivio developed dual coding theory from experiments showing that concrete, easily imaged words are remembered better than abstract ones, and pictures often better than words. The theory holds that verbal and nonverbal codes are functionally independent but interconnected, so a concept stored as both a word and an image can be retrieved through either channel. Clark and Paivio's review maps these mechanisms onto educational phenomena from concreteness effects to the value of illustrations.
Dual coding is frequently confused with learning styles, but the claims are opposite. Learning styles proposes matching presentation to a learner type, a claim that has repeatedly failed testing; dual coding proposes that combining verbal and visual codes helps most learners, because the two systems are complementary rather than alternatives.
In practice, dual coding means pairing your notes with structure you can see: a quick diagram of an argument, a timeline, a sketch next to a highlighted passage. Generating the visual yourself is the point, since translating text into an image requires deciding what the pieces are and how they relate.
