Summary

In this podcast episode, the hosts sit down with Dan Buettner and Ben Lidl, co-founders of Blue Zones, to discuss the concept of Blue Zones and how they can help people live longer, healthier lives. Blue Zones are populations around the world where people statistically live the longest. Through their research, Buettner and Lidl found nine key factors that contribute to longevity, including exercise, a plant-based diet, purpose, and social connections. They share insights on how to incorporate these factors into our daily lives, as well as how Blue Zones is working with cities to create healthier environments.

Questions & Answers

Q: What are Blue Zones and how did you first get introduced to them?

Blue Zones are populations around the world where people live statistically longest. Buettner and Lidl found the longest-lived women in Okinawa, Japan, the longest-lived men in Sardinia, Italy, a population that eludes dementia in Ikaria, Greece, a population with the lowest rate of middle-age mortality in the Nicoya Peninsula of Costa Rica, and a population of Seventh-Day Adventists in Loma Linda, California, who live longer due to their lifestyle. Blue Zones started as a National Geographic project, where they spent three years researching and identifying these longevity hotspots. Buettner first got introduced to Blue Zones through this project and was inspired to study and share their insights.

Q: Is exercise an effective way to live longer and healthier lives?

Buettner and Lidl believe that traditional exercise programs have been an unmitigated public health failure. Less than 18% of people in developed countries exercise enough. However, in Blue Zones, people are constantly engaged in physical activity due to their environments, which nudge them into mindless movement every 20 minutes or so. They don't exercise in the way we think of it, but they incorporate physical activity into their daily lives. Walking is a powerful form of physical activity, and people who can walk a mile in under 17 minutes at the age of 80 can add about six years to their life expectancy. The goal is to create environments that make it easy for people to move and be physically active.

Q: What is the role of diet in living longer and healthier lives?

In Blue Zones, people follow a mostly plant-based diet. Around 90-98% of what they eat is low-processed plant-based foods. The four pillars of every longevity diet are whole grains, greens, nuts, and beans. Consuming a handful of nuts per day can add two years to life expectancy, while eating a cup of cooked beans daily can add about four years. Blue Zone populations drink about six glasses of water a day, herbal teas, coffee (a rich source of antioxidants), and occasionally wine. The focus is on consuming whole, unprocessed foods and limiting unhealthy options.

Q: How do you incorporate a plant-based diet into a city's environment?

Blue Zones has three teams - people, places, and policy - to help create healthier environments in cities. The policy team works with cities to implement policies that support healthier food choices and promote walkability and bikeability. The places team ensures that schools, restaurants, grocery stores, workplaces, and churches become Blue Zone certified, making it easier for people to make healthier choices. Lastly, the people team engages individuals through a Blue Zone pledge, encouraging them to perform certain behaviors like using smaller plates and joining social networks focused on health and well-being.

Q: How important are social connections to longevity and well-being?

Research shows that health behaviors are contagious, just like catching a cold. In Blue Zones, people have close-knit social networks known as "moais," which influence and support positive health behaviors. Having friends who share similar interests and engage in physical activity can significantly impact one's own behavior. The presence of a best friend at work has also been shown to increase well-being. Creating a supportive social network and fostering strong relationships is vital for overall health and longevity.

Q: How does purpose contribute to longer, healthier lives?

Purpose is a significant factor in longevity. Those who have a sense of purpose in life tend to live about eight years longer than those without. Blue Zones helps individuals identify their passions, interests, and values, and connects them with volunteer opportunities that align with their purpose. Living a purposeful life provides a sense of fulfillment and an outlet for contributing positively to society. Building a sense of purpose is crucial for overall well-being and can have a profound impact on longevity.

Q: How do you create an environment where healthier habits are more accessible and attractive?

Blue Zones focuses on creating environments where healthier choices are the default options. By working with cities to implement policies that promote walkability, bikeability, and healthier food options, they make it easier for people to make healthier choices effortlessly. They encourage individuals to change aspects of their home environment, such as using smaller plates and ensuring junk food is out of sight. By reshaping environments and making healthy choices more accessible and attractive, Blue Zones aims to create lasting behavioral changes and improve overall well-being.

Q: How do social connections and purpose interact in creating healthier lives?

Social connections and purpose are interconnected factors that contribute to longer, healthier lives. People with strong social networks, particularly those that align with their interests and values, are more likely to have a sense of purpose. Purpose often includes an element of giving back and contributing to the well-being of others. By fostering social connections and helping individuals find their purpose, Blue Zones enables people to lead more fulfilling lives and supports their overall health and longevity.

Q: What is the significance of having a best friend and supportive relationships?

Research has shown that having a best friend and supportive relationships, both personally and professionally, can significantly impact well-being. Blue Zones emphasizes the importance of having close-knit social networks and supportive relationships. People who can rely on friends and colleagues during challenging times have higher resilience and better overall well-being. Building and nurturing strong relationships is an essential component of longevity and a healthier, more fulfilling life.

Q: How can individuals incorporate the Blue Zone principles into their own lives?

Individuals can incorporate Blue Zone principles into their lives by making small changes to their behaviors and environments. This includes adding physical activity into daily routines, adopting a mostly plant-based diet, prioritizing social connections and purpose, and creating supportive environments both at home and at work. By implementing the Blue Zone pledge and embracing the principles of Blue Zones, individuals can improve their overall health and well-being.

Q: How can cities implement Blue Zone principles to create healthier environments?

Blue Zones works with cities through its people, places, and policy approach. They collaborate with city officials and leaders to implement policies and practices that support healthier food options, promote walkability and bikeability, and create opportunities for social connection and purpose. This includes certifying schools, restaurants, grocery stores, workplaces, and churches as Blue Zones and encouraging individuals to make healthier choices through the Blue Zone pledge. By transforming the built environment and fostering a culture of health and well-being, cities can create healthier environments for their residents.

Takeaways

The Blue Zones approach focuses on creating environments that make healthy choices the easiest and most accessible options. Incorporating physical activity into daily routines, adopting a plant-based diet, prioritizing social connections and purpose, and creating supportive environments are key to living longer, healthier lives. By implementing these principles individually and at a city-wide level, we can make lasting behavioral changes that promote well-being and decrease chronic diseases. Making healthier choices should be effortless and enjoyable, ultimately leading to improved quality of life.
