Building Products & The Importance of Focus: Navigating the Productivity Crisis and Achieving True Success

In today's fast-paced world, it is easy to get caught up in the pursuit of multiple ideas and projects. However, in my experience, I have found that the most successful Product Managers are those who stick with one idea for an unreasonable period of time. This same principle applies to founders who are asked to build one idea for an extended duration. Venture capitalists (VCs) who fund these ideas seek conviction and focus, recognizing that building great products requires unwavering dedication.

But why is focus so crucial? It all comes down to productivity and its impact on our society, individual lives, and even the future of our careers. According to 52 years of data, we are currently facing a productivity crisis. This crisis has far-reaching consequences that could potentially lead to war, generational lifestyle stagnation, currency devaluation, the rise of communism, environmental catastrophe, and a stall in innovation. The productivity paradox, therefore, becomes the most important puzzle that will determine our future.

Contrary to popular belief, an increase in productivity does not equate to less work for employees. On the contrary, workers often feel pressured to work even harder, despite becoming more efficient. The gains in productivity are not adequately redistributed, leading to a sense of unfairness among workers. For many, productivity culture is viewed as a tool used by the ruling class within the context of capitalism to extract as much work as possible from employees.

To address this crisis, we must first acknowledge where we stand. As Peter Thiel aptly puts it, "We’ve spent 40 years wandering in the desert, and we think that it’s an enchanted forest." Only by recognizing the reality of our situation can we begin to find a way out of this desert and into a more productive future.

Interestingly, the impact of the shift to Internet-connected computers on productivity is not as significant as we might think. The benefits of this technological advancement have already been experienced between 1994 and 2004. In contrast, the revolutions brought about by technologies such as electricity and the combustion engine in the 20th century had a much broader impact on our living standards.

Furthermore, the hype surrounding AI breakthroughs often leads to inflated expectations about its immediate impact on productivity. While AI does indeed have a major influence, its true effects are spread out over many years or even decades, resulting in a less dramatic impact on productivity growth rates.

On a personal level, we all strive to achieve our goals, whether they involve finding meaning, happiness, financial success, making a significant impact, or fostering deeper connections. However, we also desire a new kind of productivity that enables us to reach these goals faster and with greater ease. This new productivity is not only more efficient but also more inclusive, allowing us to maintain a healthy work-life balance and ultimately leading to a greater sense of purpose, fulfillment, and aliveness.

To achieve this new productivity, we must break free from the plateau that often follows mastery of a particular skill. Known as the OK Plateau in academic circles, this phenomenon occurs when our performance plateaus after reaching a certain level of proficiency. To overcome this plateau, we need to cultivate an improvement mindset through deliberate learning, reflection, and experimentation.

Warren Buffett, one of the most successful investors of all time, has attributed much of his success to spending 80% of his time reading and thinking. Similarly, setting aside just five hours a week for deliberate learning and reflection can have a profound impact on our personal and professional growth. By continuously seeking knowledge and challenging ourselves, we can break free from the OK Plateau and unlock our full potential.

In conclusion, the importance of focus cannot be overstated when it comes to building great products and navigating the productivity crisis we face. By sticking with one idea and dedicating ourselves to its realization, we can achieve the conviction and results that venture capitalists seek. However, we must also recognize the broader implications of productivity in our society and individual lives. To create a better future, we need a new kind of productivity that not only increases efficiency but also fosters inclusivity, work-life balance, and personal fulfillment.

Actionable Advice:

  1. Embrace the power of focus: Choose one idea or project and commit to it for an extended period. Avoid becoming a "used car salesman" pitching multiple products. This unwavering dedication will increase your chances of building a truly great product.
  2. Understand the productivity crisis: Familiarize yourself with the productivity paradox and its potential consequences. By understanding the broader implications of productivity, you can navigate this crisis and make informed decisions.
  3. Foster an improvement mindset: Set aside dedicated time each week for deliberate learning, reflection, and experimentation. By continuously seeking knowledge and challenging yourself, you can break free from plateaus and unlock your full potential.

By incorporating these actionable advice into your professional and personal life, you can not only overcome the productivity crisis but also achieve true success and fulfillment. Remember, building great products and navigating the challenges of productivity require focus, dedication, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
