"The Feature -> Product -> Company Continuum / Augmenting Long-term Memory: Unlocking the Power of Personal Memory Systems"

Most companies begin their journey somewhere between being a feature and a product. This transition from a feature to a product to eventually becoming a full-fledged company is a crucial and often misunderstood challenge. It is not only about the scope of the product being built, but also about the size of the opportunity and how universally applicable the solution is to the market.

To truly become a product and eventually a successful company, it is important to focus on the size of the opportunity and the universality of the solution. If each user buys the "product" for a different reason, then it is likely that only a feature set has been created, rather than a true product.

One concept that has revolutionized personal memory systems is the memex vision. This vision has inspired many computer pioneers, including the ideas about the augmentation of human intelligence by Douglas Engelbart, the concept of hypertext by Ted Nelson, and the creation of the World Wide Web by Tim Berners-Lee.

Personal memory systems aim to enhance an individual's long-term memory. One powerful tool in this regard is Anki, which guarantees the retention of information with minimal effort. It transforms memory into a choice, making it easier to learn and retain knowledge.

Anki became a habit for me when I took on a project as a joke. I wanted to test if it was possible to use Anki to memorize a short book about the Unix command line. This experiment not only helped me learn the Anki interface but also allowed me to explore different ways of posing questions. The confidence gained from this project made it much easier to develop an Anki habit.

I have found Anki to be particularly helpful when reading research papers outside of my expertise. It gives me the confidence that I will retain a significant understanding of the material in the long term. However, Anki works best when used in service to a personal creative project. The emotional connection to the questions and answers makes a difference in retention.

When using Anki with research papers, it is important to extract at least five questions. Extracting fewer questions can result in a disconnection from the material, making it difficult to retain the information. Additionally, it is advisable to spend less time on unimportant papers and focus on shallow reads to identify key papers.

While Anki is a powerful tool, it is important to note that only 5% of its features provide 95% of its value. To truly internalize a process, it is not enough to review Anki cards. The process needs to be implemented in context and real problems need to be solved using it.

In conclusion, the journey from a feature to a product to a successful company requires a combination of factors such as the size of the opportunity, the universality of the solution, and the ability to develop habits like using Anki for memory enhancement. To maximize the effectiveness of Anki, it is important to connect it to personal creative projects and extract enough meaningful questions from research papers. By following these actionable advice, individuals and companies can unlock the full potential of their memory systems and propel their growth and success.
