The Changing Landscape of News Consumption: From Desktop to Mobile

In today's digital age, news consumption has undergone a significant transformation. With the advent of smartphones and tablets, people now have access to news at their fingertips, no matter where they are. However, recent research suggests that the way people read news on mobile devices is different, and perhaps even worse, than on desktop computers.

According to studies conducted in our lab, it has been observed that individuals tend to pay better attention to news presented on desktops as compared to mobile devices. On average, people spend less time engaging with news stories and are less likely to notice important links when they are reading on tablets or smartphones. This finding aligns with my personal experience, as I find reading on a desktop to be faster and more efficient, while mobile devices are better suited for skimming through content rather than deep understanding or retaining information.

While owning a mobile device undoubtedly increases access to news, it does not necessarily enhance attention to news. This raises concerns about the rush to monetize mobile news delivery, as it may unintentionally decrease the democratic value of news. The push for economic value in mobile news might overshadow the importance of information processing on these devices, ultimately impacting the quality of news consumption.

In light of these challenges, it is crucial to explore alternative approaches to news consumption that prioritize attention and engagement. One such proposal is the concept of Open Source Attention (OSA), which draws inspiration from the decentralization and open-source software movements. OSA aims to "free" human attention from platform control by creating a decentralized ecosystem for stigmergic markers, which are digital traces of human attention.

Currently, user annotations such as likes and retweets are locked within platform data silos, serving only to optimize platform growth. OSA seeks to empower users by employing distributed content creation and storage technology, allowing for the emergence of novel system-level behaviors. In this context, stigmergic markers play a crucial role as signaling cues that indicate the epistemic value of content. These markers, which include likes, annotations, hyperlinking of text, and semantic categorization, can be leveraged for both extractive purposes, such as ad-tech, and constructive purposes, such as collective sense-making.

To achieve a healthier epistemic environment, it is essential to move away from the exploitation of attention and toward supporting our intentions. Similar to the open-source software movement, OSA aims to "free" stigmergic markers starting from basic hypertext primitives. By introducing interoperable protocols and storage for stigmergic primitives, existing personal knowledge management (PKM) systems can be leveraged to contribute to collective sense-making efforts. This approach aligns with the "protocols, not platforms" philosophy, allowing for the sharing of data across diverse PKM apps on a global scale.

As we navigate the changing landscape of news consumption, it is important to consider actionable advice that can enhance the attention and engagement of users. Here are three recommendations:

  1. Design for mobile optimization: While desktop may offer a more immersive reading experience, mobile devices are here to stay. It is crucial for news outlets and content creators to prioritize mobile optimization, ensuring that news stories are easily readable and engaging on smaller screens.

  2. Encourage active participation: Instead of treating news consumption as a passive activity, encourage readers to actively participate through comments, annotations, and discussions. By fostering a sense of community and collective sense-making, users are more likely to engage deeply with news content.

  3. Promote media literacy: In an era of fake news and information overload, media literacy is more important than ever. Teach individuals how to critically evaluate news sources, fact-check information, and discern between reliable and unreliable sources. By empowering users with media literacy skills, we can cultivate a more informed and engaged society.

In conclusion, the shift from desktop to mobile news consumption has brought about both opportunities and challenges. While mobile devices offer increased access to news, they also present limitations in terms of attention and engagement. By exploring alternative approaches such as Open Source Attention and implementing actionable advice, we can strive for a more democratic, informed, and engaged society in the digital age.
