OSA aims to create a decentralized ecosystem that allows for the creation, storage, and querying of stigmergic markers, which are digital traces of human attention. By harnessing the power of stigmergic social annotation, we can foster healthier epistemic environments and support collective sensemaking.
The Role of Stigmergic Communication:
Stigmergic communication is a form of distributed memory, where modifications made by others act as cybernetic feedback, driving the emergence of novel system-level behavior. In the context of digital platforms, there are two types of modifications: sematectonic stigmergy and stigmergic markers. Sematectonic stigmergy directly alters the environment state, such as creating new content. On the other hand, stigmergic markers, like likes, annotations, and hyperlinking of text, serve as signaling cues without directly modifying content. These markers are valuable resources as they indicate epistemic value and can be utilized for both extractive (e.g., ad-tech) and constructive (e.g., collective sensemaking) purposes.
Freeing Stigmergic Markers:
Similar to the open-source software movement, OSA aims to "free" stigmergic markers, starting with basic hypertext primitives. These primitives include emotional valence (e.g., likes), bi-directional links, span highlighting, semantic categorization (tags, bookmarks), and textual annotation. By enabling interoperable protocols and storage for these stigmergic primitives, OSA can leverage existing personal knowledge management (PKM) apps to contribute to collective sensemaking efforts. Rather than competing with massive platforms, OSA embraces the "protocols, not platforms" approach, allowing diverse PKM apps to share data and facilitate global-scale sensemaking.
Overcoming Challenges and Scaling Up:
One key question when considering the adoption of OSA is how it can compete with well-established platforms. However, by integrating interoperable protocols and storage for stigmergic primitives, OSA can bootstrap the growth of existing PKM apps, transforming them into collective knowledge management (CKM) tools. This approach aligns with the notion of "protocols, not platforms" and enables the sharing of data across diverse apps, contributing to the collective sensemaking efforts on a global scale.
