Sematectonic stigmergy involves directly altering the environment's state, such as creating new content. On the other hand, stigmergic markers do not modify content but instead serve as signaling cues, including likes, annotations, and hyperlinking of text.
The Significance of Stigmergic Markers:
Stigmergic markers can be seen as digital traces of human attention, offering valuable indicators of epistemic value. These markers have significant potential both for extractive purposes, such as ad-tech, and constructive purposes, such as collective sensemaking. The Open Source Attention Movement:
Similar to the open-source software movement, Open Source Attention (OSA) strives to "free" stigmergic markers. Starting with basic hypertext primitives like emotional valence (likes), bi-directional links, span highlighting, semantic categorization (tags, bookmarks), and textual annotation, OSA aims to create a movement where users have control over their attention data. By adopting interoperable protocols and storage systems for stigmergic primitives, OSA can facilitate the sharing of data across diverse Personal Knowledge Management (PKM) applications, contributing to collective sensemaking efforts.
