Building Products & The Importance of Focus

YouTube is 15 years old. Here's a timeline of how YouTube was founded, its rise to video behemoth, and its biggest controversies along the way.

In my career, I have observed that the Product Managers who succeed are those who stick with one idea for an unreasonable period of time. Founders are asked to build one idea for an unreasonable period of time. VC’s who fund that idea seek conviction and focus. Do not become your product team's version of a used car salesman with many products to pitch and sell — that isn’t how you build great products.

YouTube first started as a dating site, but it turned into a platform where users started uploading videos of all kinds. This shift in direction was a pivotal moment for YouTube, as it opened up new possibilities and opportunities. Sometimes, the path to success involves adapting and evolving your initial idea.

In September 2005, investment firm Sequoia Capital invested $3.5 million in YouTube's Series A round. This early financial backing provided the necessary resources for YouTube to grow and expand its user base. It is crucial for product managers and founders to secure funding from reputable investors who believe in their vision.

By December 2005, YouTube officially launched out of beta and made its platform available to the public. At this point, YouTube was already receiving 8 million views a day. This rapid growth demonstrated the power of user-generated content and the demand for a platform that allowed individuals to share their videos with the world.

One of the defining moments for YouTube came in April 2006 when a video of two boys in China lip-synching to the Backstreet Boys was uploaded. This seemingly ordinary video caught the attention of Susan Wojcicki, YouTube's current CEO, who was in charge of Google's acquisitions at the time. This video convinced her that investing in user-generated content by acquiring YouTube would be a worthwhile endeavor. This highlights the importance of staying open to unexpected opportunities and being able to recognize their potential.

In October 2006, after a back-and-forth battle between Yahoo and Google, YouTube was acquired by Google for a staggering $1.65 billion. This acquisition not only secured the future of YouTube but also rewarded the co-founders with substantial profits. It is crucial for product managers and founders to have a clear vision and strategic partnerships that can help propel their product to new heights.

In May 2007, a 56-second home video of a baby named Charlie biting his brother's finger went viral on YouTube. This unexpected viral sensation demonstrated the unpredictable nature of what captures people's attention. It is essential for product managers and founders to embrace experimentation and be open to taking calculated risks in order to create content that resonates with the audience.

Based on these insights, here are three actionable pieces of advice for building great products:

  1. Focus on one idea: Instead of spreading yourself too thin by trying to build multiple products simultaneously, focus on one idea and give it your undivided attention. This unwavering focus allows you to refine and iterate on your product, increasing the chances of success.

  2. Adapt and evolve: Don't be afraid to pivot or change directions if the market demands it. YouTube's transformation from a dating site to a video-sharing platform is a prime example of how adapting and evolving can lead to greater opportunities and success.

  3. Embrace experimentation: Just like the viral video of Charlie biting his brother's finger, you never know what content will resonate with the audience. Don't be afraid to experiment and take calculated risks. This willingness to try new things can lead to unexpected breakthroughs and viral sensations.

In conclusion, building great products requires focus, adaptability, and a willingness to experiment. By staying committed to your idea, being open to new opportunities, and embracing experimentation, you can increase your chances of creating a product that resonates with users and stands the test of time.
