The Early Days of AI and the Rise of Cappuccino: Exploring New Capabilities and Personal Audio Sharing
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has come a long way since its early days. Rather than viewing recent advancements in LLMs, Transformers, and diffusion models as mere continuations of past AI technologies, it is crucial to recognize that we are entering an entirely new era. This discontinuity marks a significant shift in capabilities and products enabled by AI.
In the past, the value in AI waves primarily went to established companies, as the technology was not advanced enough to create new market opportunities. However, with the advent of new AI capabilities, we are now witnessing a step function in the potential for innovation and growth. The launch of ChatGPT, for instance, served as a catalyst for mainstream recognition that AI is a game-changer.
Despite this, we are still in the early stages of AI adoption. Large enterprise planning cycles often take several months, followed by a year or more of prototyping and building. As a result, we are far from reaching the peak of AI usage or the peak of AI hype. In fact, there are likely at least four waves of AI to consider in these early days.
The first wave is characterized by the emergence of "GenAI native" companies, such as ChatGPT, Midjourney, Character.AI, Stable Diffusion, and Github copilot. These early launches have gained significant revenue and user traction, paving the way for further advancements.
The current wave, which we are currently experiencing, involves early startup adopters and fast mid-market incumbents. Startups are leveraging technologies like GPT-3.5/4 to create innovative solutions. Likewise, some multi-billion dollar companies, such as Navan, Notion, Quora, Replit, and Zapier, have quickly embraced AI-powered products.
The next wave, expected to arrive soon, will bring forth a new generation of startups. These companies will explore new formats like voice and video, alongside leveraging natural language processing in various industries and applications. Eleven Labs, LMNT, LFG Labs, Braintrust, and many others will contribute to this wave, providing incremental experiences.
Lastly, the fourth wave, projected to emerge around 2024 or 2025, will witness the adoption of AI by major enterprises. Due to their lengthy planning and build cycles, larger companies other than industry giants like Microsoft, Adobe, Google, and Meta will begin releasing tangible AI products, rather than just prototypes or demos.
