The Evolving Landscape of Product Management and the Crypto Future of Work
Product management plays a crucial role in the success and growth of a company. However, there are several misconceptions surrounding what product management truly entails. Contrary to popular belief, product management is not about defining the business case or market requirements. It is not solely focused on requirements gathering or project management. Additionally, product management is not synonymous with product marketing.
Defining the business case and market requirements are important tasks, but they are not the sole responsibility of a product manager. Markets don't have requirements; people do. Therefore, it is essential for the person responsible for defining a product to directly communicate with the target audience. By engaging with customers, the product manager can gain valuable insights and ensure that the product meets their needs effectively.
Similarly, while requirements gathering is a critical aspect of product management, it is not the entirety of the role. Product managers must also possess the skills to navigate the discovery phase of product development. This involves understanding user needs, conducting market research, and identifying opportunities for innovation. On the other hand, project management focuses on the delivery phase, ensuring that the product is built and launched successfully. These two roles require different skill sets, making it rare to find individuals who excel at both.
It is also important to differentiate product management from product marketing. Product marketing involves activities such as pricing, promotions, positioning, messaging, and product launch strategies. While these aspects are crucial for a product's success, they fall under the domain of product marketing and not product management. The primary responsibility of a product manager is to discover a product that is useful, usable, and feasible. If they fulfill this responsibility, they have effectively done their job. Otherwise, investing time and money in building and launching a product would be futile.
Now, let's shift our focus to the future of work, particularly in the context of cryptocurrency. The emergence of crypto has introduced a fascinating perspective on the future of work. One of the most intriguing ideas is that work may not always involve traditional job roles. In a token society, individuals may be able to earn money by engaging in activities that were previously considered leisure. Simultaneously, they could spend money on things that were once considered work.
The concept of a token society assumes that most people will not be required to work to fulfill basic needs like food, shelter, and other necessities. In such an economy, human work will primarily revolve around serving and entertaining others. This shift towards an abundance-oriented environment will redefine the purpose of work. People will not only get paid for engaging in activities they enjoy, but some may also pay for the opportunity to work.
