"Unlocking Collective Sensemaking and Effective Product Management: Connecting the Dots"
Introduction:
In today's platform-centric digital landscape, the role of users in shaping the online experience has become increasingly significant. However, their contributions are often locked within the data silos of different platforms, limiting their potential for collective sensemaking. Inspired by the principles of decentralization and open source movements, a new socio-technical framework called Open Source Attention (OSA) aims to free human attention from platform control, enabling users to become active (sense)makers. Additionally, understanding the core principles of product management is crucial for creating valuable and viable solutions that address real problems for users and customers. By exploring the commonalities between OSA and effective product management, we can uncover actionable insights to improve both areas.
Unleashing the Power of Stigmergic Social Annotation:
OSA proposes a decentralized ecosystem for creating, storing, and querying stigmergic markers, which are digital traces of human attention. While platforms currently exploit these markers to optimize their growth, OSA seeks to empower maker-centric ecologies by enabling distributed content creation and storage. Stigmergic communication, where the environment acts as a distributed memory, allows for the emergence of novel system-level behavior. There are two types of modifications within this context: sematectonic stigmergy, which directly alters the environment state, and stigmergic markers, which serve as signaling cues. These markers, such as likes, annotations, and hyperlinking of text, hold immense epistemic value and can be leveraged for extractive or constructive purposes. OSA aims to "free" these markers, starting with basic hypertext primitives, to support collective sensemaking efforts.
Connecting OSA and Effective Product Management:
While OSA focuses on freeing stigmergic markers, effective product management revolves around creating valuable and viable solutions for users and customers. Product managers have the responsibility of ensuring that what gets built aligns with user needs and business goals. However, it's important to note that the product owner responsibilities are just a subset of the broader product manager role. Instead of being given features to build, product teams are tasked with solving problems through product discovery. This process involves finding solutions that are valuable, usable, feasible, and viable. Product teams deliver outcomes rather than just output, which poses a greater challenge.
