Substack's only requirement is a commitment to a minimum publishing frequency to ensure that writers are dedicated to their craft. To assess the market opportunity of a publication, Substack considers factors such as audience size, social media engagement, and the respect the writer garners from readers and peers. By valuing a diversity of thought and supporting writers who may face opposition, Substack contributes to a healthy discourse and the preservation of a free press.

In a similar vein, Medium, an online publishing platform, introduced a feature called Highlights that forever changed the way readers engage with content. This feature allows users to highlight and share their favorite passages, quotes, or insights from articles. Medium recognized that depth and engagement matter more than reaching a larger audience, and Highlights facilitated meaningful interactions within the Medium community.

The inspiration for Highlights came from Medium's Notes feature, where users could leave comments in the margins of a post. By analyzing product history and exploring new ideas, Medium's product team identified the need for an interactive feature that would enhance the reading experience. However, they soon realized that the user experience varied depending on whether a user followed anyone on Medium or already followed numerous writers. To address this challenge, Medium implemented filtering mechanisms to ensure that all users, regardless of their follower count, could benefit from Highlights.
