Finding “Product-Human Need Fit” in the Post-Covid Era: Life is Short
In the post-Covid era, the world has experienced a seismic shift. Individuals now have stronger voices than ever before, demanding products and experiences that align with their unique identities and values. As we navigate this new landscape, it is crucial that the next generation of innovation extends beyond those with access, privilege, and power, to also address the needs of under-represented communities.
The impact of the pandemic was felt by all, but it disproportionately affected those who have been overlooked for far too long. It is in this context that we must reevaluate the concept of "product-market fit" and instead focus on achieving "product-human need fit." By digging into the motivations behind consumer behavior, we can better understand the evolving needs of individuals and create products that truly resonate with them.
Covid-19 forced people to descend to the most primal levels of the pyramid, regardless of their previous circumstances. Suddenly, everyone was faced with the challenge of meeting their basic needs. This universal experience highlighted the importance of addressing these fundamental requirements in any product or service design. It became clear that our collective progress as a society is hindered if a segment of our community is struggling to meet these basic human needs.
Furthermore, the events of the past year have brought a renewed focus on social and political movements. The Black Lives Matter movement, Stop AAPI Violence, and Transgender Rights advocacy have shed light on the pervasive deprivation of basic human needs faced by marginalized communities. It is no longer enough to focus solely on efficiency, performance, and achievement. We must also ensure that our innovations address the underlying needs of all individuals in our society.
In the pursuit of creating products that truly meet human needs, it is essential to consider the concept of time. Life is short, and we often take things for granted until they are gone. One common example of this is online arguments. When someone contradicts us, our instinct is to defend ourselves. However, in the grand scheme of things, these arguments do not truly matter. Instead of wasting our time and energy on defending ourselves, we should focus on the things that truly bring meaning to our lives.
One way to distinguish what truly matters is by considering whether we will care about it in the future. We must not wait to pursue our passions and ambitions. Whether it is climbing a mountain, writing a book, or visiting loved ones, we should seize the opportunity to do these things now. We often assume that there will always be time, but the truth is that the window of opportunity can close unexpectedly.
