The Evolution of User Interfaces:
In the early days of computing, around 1945, batch processing was the prevailing UI paradigm. Users would specify a complete workflow for the computer, which would then execute the commands without any back-and-forth interaction. This UI model provided limited flexibility and required users to have a clear understanding of the entire workflow upfront.
Around 1964, time-sharing introduced the command-based interaction paradigm. Users and computers would take turns, with users issuing commands and the computer executing them one at a time. This allowed users to reassess the situation after each command and modify subsequent commands accordingly. Command-based interactions brought more flexibility and user control compared to batch processing.
The Rise of the Graphical User Interface:
The graphical user interface (GUI) revolutionized the UX world with its introduction in 1984 through the Macintosh. GUIs provided a visual and interactive way for users to interact with computers, leading to approximately 40 years of dominance in the UI landscape. However, the emergence of AI systems is now paving the way for the next UI paradigm.
AI as the Third UI Paradigm:
AI, represented by current generative AI systems like ChatGPT, is introducing the third UI paradigm in computing history. This new paradigm shifts the locus of control, allowing users to communicate their desired outcomes instead of specifying how to achieve them. Intent-based outcome specification is at the core of this new UI model.
The Limitations of Current AI Systems:
While AI-powered interfaces hold immense potential, there are certain limitations that need to be addressed. The current chat-based interaction style often requires users to articulate their problems in prose, which can be challenging for a significant portion of the population. Research suggests that around half of the population in rich countries may struggle to effectively utilize AI bots due to articulation limitations.
