"When Content Creation Goes to Zero: The Impact of AI on the Economy and Individual Workers"

The internet revolutionized the way we distribute goods and services by reducing distribution costs to zero. Now, with the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), we are on the brink of another major shift. AI tools like GPT-3 and DALL-E are set to dramatically decrease the cost of producing goods with a digital component, effectively pushing creation costs to zero. This begs the question: what will our economy look like when acquisition is the only thing left to compete for?

Truly disruptive technology companies are those that combine novel tech with unique market conditions. However, technology alone is not enough for success. A company needs incredible marketing, beatable competitors, and the right team. Without these elements, the enterprise is bound to fail. While existing technology companies will solidify their market position with AI tools, I am more bullish on startups that act as infrastructure providers for other companies.

However, my hypothesis is that these AI tools will have a more disruptive impact on individual workers than on companies. The two main ways AI will transform the workforce are through creation and collaboration. We will witness the creation of products that entirely replace those previously requiring human input. Additionally, humans will be paired with AI tools to enhance and expedite their workflows.

As with any technological advancement, a power law dynamic will emerge, concentrating power in the hands of the elite. The internet's impact on society was greater than that of niche technology categories because it reshaped how we coordinate physical labor. Similarly, AI will have far-reaching effects when it automates content creation costs to zero. Companies with novel acquisition methods that bypass traditional gatekeepers will accumulate more power.

Another interesting aspect to consider is how AI will influence product design itself. The winning products will be those that provide the best data to train AI models. This means that products will need to be redesigned to have better training inputs, favoring those that can optimize this aspect.

Marshall McLuhan's famous quote, "the medium is the message," may need updating in the AI era. If algorithms determine the successful medium, who takes responsibility for the message? This shift in our relationship with content will blur the lines between what is real, fake, or tailored specifically for us.

Moving on to the psychological realm, we explore why facts often fail to change our minds. According to Harvard psychologist Steven Pinker, our beliefs serve the purpose of gaining allies, protectors, or disciples, rather than seeking truth. People are more inclined to prove their beliefs right rather than change their minds. Convincing someone to change their mind requires convincing them to change their tribe, as leaving their beliefs could result in losing social ties.

Humans have a deep desire to belong, which has been crucial for survival throughout our evolutionary history. We prioritize fitting in, bonding with others, and earning the respect and approval of our peers. When faced with a choice between facts and social connections, people tend to choose the latter. Friendship, rather than facts, has a greater impact on changing minds.

The proximity and closeness of individuals play a significant role in shaping their beliefs. The beliefs of those we are close to often bleed over into our own minds. Therefore, the best place to ponder threatening ideas is in a non-threatening environment. Books, for example, provide a psychologically safe space for transforming beliefs as the conversation takes place within one's head.

Silence is detrimental to the propagation of ideas. Ideas that are not spoken or written down perish with their creators. Clear's Law of Recurrence states that the more an idea is repeated, the more people believe it, even if it's false. Therefore, it is more productive to champion good ideas rather than tear down bad ones. Instead of wasting time explaining why bad ideas are bad, focus on sharing and promoting good ideas.

When engaging in discussions, it is important to remember that most people argue to win, not to learn. Tyler Cowen advises spending as little time as possible talking about how other people are wrong. Instead, focus on keeping the conversation going by being willing to not win. Kindness plays a crucial role in changing someone's mind. By treating others like family, developing friendships, sharing meals, and gifting books, we create an environment where minds can be changed.

In conclusion, AI's impact on the economy and individual workers cannot be underestimated. With content creation costs approaching zero, the competition will shift towards acquisition. Startups that act as infrastructure providers may have an edge in this new landscape. Additionally, AI's influence on product design and the blurred lines between real and fake content will reshape our relationship with content itself.

On the psychological front, we must acknowledge that facts alone are not enough to change minds. People prioritize social connections over facts, and changing someone's mind entails changing their tribe. Proximity and closeness play a significant role in shaping beliefs, making non-threatening environments like books ideal for transforming ideas.

To promote the spread of good ideas, it is important to champion them rather than tear down bad ones. Engaging in discussions with kindness and treating others like family can create an environment where minds can be changed. By understanding the impact of AI and adopting actionable advice, we can navigate the changing landscape of content creation and the complexities of human belief systems.
