The 20% Rule: How Learning and Growth Drive Success in Business and Life
Thomas Edison, Salvador Dali, and a Navy SEAL all follow the 20% Rule. This rule states that top companies and entrepreneurs spend 20% of their time on activities such as experiments and skill-building. But how much time should we dedicate to learning and experimentation in order to have a thriving career?
Interestingly, 3M has had an informal 15% Rule for decades, further supporting the idea that dedicating a significant portion of our time to learning can lead to success. Even GaryVee, a well-known entrepreneur, follows the 20% Rule. And Navy SEAL Jocko Willink makes a compelling case for its effectiveness.
Based on my research, I believe that the 20% Rule applies to high-skill knowledge workers who engage in non-routine activities. This means that individuals in these roles should aim to spend 20% of their workweek on learning and experimentation.
Genentech, one of the largest companies in the world, also follows the 20% Rule, further validating its effectiveness. Additionally, 95% of people surveyed believe that implementing the 20% Rule would make them more productive.
With all this research in mind, I have personally decided to increase my learning time from one hour per day to 3-4 hours. I firmly believe that every moment in life is an opportunity to learn and grow. But how do we capitalize on these opportunities?
One approach is adaptive learning, which is the ability to learn in any situation. To become an adaptive learner, we should focus on mastering T.E.E.M.Z:
- Time: Find and make time in your schedule specifically for learning and skill-building.
- Energy: Develop energy rituals that prevent burnout and keep you in a state of optimal learning throughout the day.
- Environment: Choose environments that facilitate learning and minimize distractions.
- Mindset: Shift from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset, embracing challenges and seeing failures as opportunities for growth.
- Zone: Recognize and move overwhelming triggers into the learning zone, where they can fuel growth instead of hindering it.
Another strategy is double time, which involves combining learning with other activities already included in your daily schedule. For example, I utilize my sauna sessions by spending 25 minutes reading and reflecting, followed by another 20 minutes of learning as I cool down. This allows me to maximize my learning time without sacrificing other responsibilities.
Deliberate learning is also crucial. This approach is based on the idea of deliberate practice, where world-class performers dedicate focused time to improving their skills. Just 15 minutes of deliberate learning can drive 20% of the overall learning gain. By consistently seeking incremental improvements in our skills, we can become world-class performers over time.
Surprisingly, one of the best times to learn is during breaks. Taking breaks allows our subconscious mind to process information and generate insights. Thomas Edison and Reid Hoffman, founder of LinkedIn, both emphasize the importance of utilizing this time to maximize creativity and problem-solving abilities.
Energy is a key factor in learning. Just as light is detrimental to vampires, low energy can hinder our ability to absorb and retain information. Prioritizing sleep and incorporating naps into our routine can keep us in the optimal learning zone throughout the day.
Furthermore, learning should be integrated into our everyday lives. As a writer and teacher, I have the privilege of getting paid to learn. This mindset shift can transform learning from something we do on the side to an integral part of our professional and personal growth.
To make the most of our learning journey, we must cultivate a growth mindset and embrace experiences outside of our comfort zone. Triggers that were once obstacles can become opportunities for growth. Ray Dalio, a self-made billionaire, has developed a system to turn triggers into learning opportunities, emphasizing the importance of reflection and analysis.
Ultimately, the more time we dedicate to learning, the more successful and purposeful our lives become. By embodying wisdom and transmitting it through our actions and words, we contribute to the universe's process of evolution and creation.
In conclusion, the 20% Rule has been proven effective by successful individuals, companies, and entrepreneurs. By prioritizing learning and growth, we can achieve success in our careers and live purposeful lives. To implement the 20% Rule, consider the following actionable advice:
- Find and allocate dedicated time for learning and skill-building in your schedule.
- Develop energy rituals to maintain optimal learning throughout the day.
- Embrace a growth mindset and view challenges as opportunities for growth.
Remember, every moment is an opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.
