Having a multidisciplinary attitude is important in today's rapidly evolving world. As a young designer, it is crucial to embrace a diverse skill set and be open to learning and exploring different fields. While specialized titles may help you secure jobs in specific industries, it is essential to understand that the design world is heading towards a multidisciplinary approach.

To truly excel in your career, you need to go beyond the surface level and develop a deeper understanding of the problems you are trying to solve. Empathy and research are key foundations for any successful design process. By asking the right questions, you can identify the true essence of the problem and work towards finding innovative solutions.

In my own journey, I discovered the power of multidisciplinary thinking when I joined Reddit. As I immersed myself in the community, I quickly realized that the moderators were our most important customer segment. This insight led me to prioritize community-led product development with our trusted moderators, creating a platform called Talk.

By involving the moderators in the development process, we were able to build a product that truly met their needs. We engaged in daily dialogues, shared designs, and openly responded to feedback. This collaborative approach not only strengthened our product but also turned the moderators into an extension of our product team. It was a privilege to work directly with customers and build a product that was tailored to their requirements.

Additionally, I also learned the importance of growing a community and the need for proper onboarding. In hindsight, I realized that I should have taken a slower approach and focused on providing new members with a clear understanding of the community's mission. By having designated channels for beginners, introductions, and assistance, we can ensure that newcomers feel welcomed and supported.

Moreover, it is crucial to find core contributors within the community. Instead of solely focusing on the number of members, we should prioritize activating individuals who are passionate about the community's mission and have the ability to make a difference. These core contributors become the driving force behind the community's growth and success. It is important to show gratitude, amplify their contributions, and even make them co-owners to foster a sense of ownership and commitment.

Building a community requires effort and commitment, but it is a skill worth developing. In today's digital age, it is easier than ever for a group of internet friends to come together and create something great. By kindling small fires and empowering different teams within the community, we can harness the collective power and drive the community towards success.

In conclusion, having a multidisciplinary attitude is crucial for designers in today's evolving landscape. By embracing diverse skills and approaches, we can better understand the problems we are trying to solve and develop innovative solutions. Additionally, building a community is a critical skill that allows us to collaborate with customers and create products that truly meet their needs. Prioritizing onboarding, finding core contributors, and empowering small teams are actionable pieces of advice that can help us cultivate successful communities. So, let's embrace the multidisciplinary mindset and build thriving communities that make a difference.
