In recent years, there has been a growing interest in object-oriented user experience (OOUI) and its application in application design. OOUI refers to the use of objects as a means to correlate screens and data in the design process. It emphasizes the importance of modeling the GUI (Graphical User Interface) based on objects, allowing users to interact directly with them. This approach is in contrast to CLI (Command-Line Interface), where users first choose a task and then specify objects or parameters as arguments. The "noun-verb" syntax is a crucial element in achieving modeless design, enabling users to operate in a "noun-verb" order. However, there are exceptions to this rule, such as task-based GUIs that are acceptable in cases where the selection of objects is limited or when providing standardized input flows.

While OOUI offers a user-centric approach that enhances productivity and creativity, it also comes with challenges. One of these challenges is the potential for dark patterns (DP) to emerge in the interface design. DPs are deceptive and malicious characteristics of user interfaces that lead users to take actions that may not align with their intentions or expectations. These patterns can be embedded within the UI as interactive elements or triggers that respond to user engagement.

To better understand the prevalence and effects of DP in the Japanese context, researchers conducted the first study on DP in Japan. The study aimed to reveal the distribution and frequency of DP in Japan's app landscape, considering the thriving e-commerce market and widespread use of mobile devices and apps. The term "dark pattern" was coined by Brignull in 2010, and it refers to the deceptive design patterns registered under darkpatterns.org. The study also drew from the classification system developed by Gray et al. and refined by Di Geronimo et al. to explore the unknown case of Japan.

The researchers discovered a correlation between age, education level, and the ability to identify specific DPs. They also identified DP blindness, where users may experience DP but fail to recognize it. It is worth noting that there is a lack of DP research in countries with similar industrial profiles, particularly in Japan and other East Asian countries. While India and Di Geronimo's research shed some light on DP in these regions, there is a need for more detailed studies.

The study aimed to reproduce the qualitative expert-based classification by Di Geronimo et al. in the context of Japanese apps. It sought to reveal similarities and differences in DP subclasses and distributions based on cultural and linguistic dimensions. The research protocol was registered on OSF4 before data collection and analysis in December.

The researchers employed a manual process where pairs of researchers reviewed a total of 200 app records and discussed the identified DPs. This hands-on approach allowed for a deeper understanding of the specific DPs present in the Japanese app landscape.

Several types of DPs were identified, including obstruction, sneaking, nagging, interface interference, and linguistic dead-ends. Obstruction refers to UI elements that impede smooth user operations, such as the use of app-specific currencies, prevention of price comparison, or difficulty in account deletion. Sneaking involves designers subtly incorporating user-related information to gain benefits. Nagging is the persistent use of pop-ups or notifications to drive user behavior according to the designer's intentions. Interface interference manipulates UI elements to make specific actions more or less noticeable.

Linguistic dead-ends are a newly discovered DP that hinder or obstruct user understanding of an app's interface or content by manipulating language at a fundamental level. This DP has two subclasses: untranslation and alphabet soup. Untranslation involves using unfamiliar languages, even if the app is advertised as being available in the user's language. Alphabet soup refers to information presented in local characters, symbols, and numbers that are not understandable to the user.

The study also revealed a connection between linguistic proficiency in foreign languages and the presence of alphabet soup or a combination of subclasses in a more sophisticated linguistic dead-end strategy. Additionally, the study found that 36% of the respondents agreed to terms of service without reading them, with length being cited as a reason.

In conclusion, the combination of OOUI and DP sheds light on the intersection of user experience design and deceptive practices in interface design. While OOUI offers a user-centric approach that enhances productivity and creativity, it also poses challenges in terms of the potential emergence of dark patterns. Understanding and addressing DP is crucial to ensure ethical and transparent design practices.

By incorporating these recommendations, designers can create interfaces that prioritize user well-being and foster positive interactions.
