In the pursuit of success, whether it be in our personal or professional lives, we often find ourselves seeking strategies and methods that can help us achieve our goals consistently and repeatedly. The concept of "学以致用" or "applying what we learn" is a key principle that can greatly contribute to our growth and development.

Learning with the intention of applying our knowledge means that our learning serves a purpose - to help us lead better lives and solve real-world problems. It is only through the act of outputting what we have learned that we can truly internalize and solidify our understanding. In fact, 80% of learning problems stem from a lack of effective output.

During the "学以致用" course, several key concepts were introduced, but two in particular stood out for me. The first is the knowledge tree learning method, which was discussed over the course of five sessions. The aim of this method is to transform scientific memory techniques into a practical approach for solving real-life problems. By organizing our knowledge into a structured system, we can more effectively apply what we have learned.

Another concept that resonated with me is the idea of using a card-based thinking process. The 72-20-10 rule was introduced, highlighting that 70% of our learning and growth comes from our work itself. This emphasizes the importance of active learning in our day-to-day job responsibilities. Additionally, 20% of our growth stems from effective communication - collaborating with colleagues, teaching others, and engaging with clients and leaders. The remaining 10% comes from specialized training and learning environments.

These insights highlight the importance of various forms of output in our professional lives. When we report our work to superiors, it is essential to convey our efficiency and professionalism. When collaborating with our team or participating in department meetings, clear and structured communication is crucial. Reflecting on our work and summarizing our experiences is another form of output. Furthermore, when we mentor and develop new team members, we are engaging in downward output. Finally, external output is demonstrated when we persuade clients to place new orders or showcase our abilities externally.

To fully embrace the concept of "学以致用," it is crucial to transform fragmented and superficial reading practices into a more output-oriented learning approach. Rather than simply consuming information without purpose, we should take notes and organize our thoughts using tools like Evernote. This shift allows us to transform our reading into a more intentional and applicable form of learning. Reading on a specific topic or conducting thematic research emphasizes the importance of effort and investment.

While theoretical learning may be ever-evolving and open to interpretation, the experiences and lessons we gain from real-life situations are timeless and invaluable. By actively seeking opportunities to apply our knowledge and skills, we can continuously improve and win repeatedly.

In conclusion, the concept of "学以致用" encompasses the idea of applying what we learn in our daily lives. By adopting a knowledge tree learning method and utilizing card-based thinking processes, we can enhance our abilities to solve real-world problems. Additionally, emphasizing various forms of output, such as upward, parallel, inward, and outward, allows us to consistently grow and develop. To embrace the value of "学以致用," it is important to transform our reading practices into a more intentional and applicable form of learning. By doing so, we can ensure that our knowledge and skills are effectively utilized and contribute to our long-term success.

Actionable advice:

  1. Implement the knowledge tree learning method by organizing your knowledge into a structured system. This will help you apply what you have learned to real-life situations more effectively.
  2. Emphasize various forms of output in your work, such as clear communication, summarizing experiences, and mentoring others. This will not only enhance your learning but also showcase your abilities to others.
  3. Transform your reading habits by taking notes and organizing your thoughts using tools like Evernote. This will help you turn your reading into a more intentional and applicable form of learning.

Remember, the true value of learning lies in its application. By actively seeking opportunities to apply what you have learned, you can enhance your skills, solve problems, and achieve repeated success.
