Postmodernity: Where has Meaning & Purpose Gone?

In our current society, we are experiencing a cultural collapse that has led to what can be described as an "inward homelessness". This collapse is not happening on the outside, but rather within ourselves. We have lost a sense of meaning and purpose, and as a result, our identity has been redefined. Culture plays a significant role in providing meaning and purpose to our lives, and when we reject it, we diminish our own identity.

A great society is one that passes culture from one generation to the next. It is through this passing down of traditions, values, and experiences that we find a sense of meaning and purpose. However, when a generation no longer esteems its own heritage and fails to pass it on, it is essentially saying that the principles and experiences that make the society what it is are no longer valid. Our rejection of religious stories, such as creation, King David, and the Christ, has resulted in a loss of culture that once gave us meaning and purpose. Consequently, our identity has diminished.

This cultural collapse has left us searching for a new identity. We have tried to fill the vacuum of meaning and purpose with various things, but often these attempts fall short. Purpose has become defined through asserting our identity, rather than understanding who gave us that identity and why. In losing a spiritual, faith-based identity, we have become lost ourselves.

But how can we find meaning and purpose in a postmodern world? How can we navigate this cultural collapse and rediscover our identity? Here are three actionable pieces of advice:

  1. Embrace and preserve your cultural heritage: Despite the rejection of religious stories and traditions, it is important to acknowledge and embrace the culture that has shaped us. By preserving our cultural heritage, we can find a sense of meaning and purpose that is rooted in our shared history.

  2. Seek out new sources of meaning: While traditional sources of meaning may have diminished, there are still opportunities to find purpose in the modern world. Explore new interests, engage in meaningful relationships, and pursue personal growth. By actively seeking out new sources of meaning, we can redefine our identity in a postmodern context.

  3. Connect with others who share your values: Finding meaning and purpose is often a collective endeavor. Surround yourself with individuals who share your values and beliefs. Engage in conversations, participate in community activities, and build connections with like-minded individuals. By connecting with others, we can find validation and support in our search for meaning.

In conclusion, the cultural collapse of postmodernity has left us feeling inwardly homeless. We have lost a sense of meaning and purpose, and our identity has been redefined as a result. However, by embracing our cultural heritage, seeking out new sources of meaning, and connecting with others who share our values, we can navigate this cultural collapse and rediscover our identity. It is through these actions that we can find a renewed sense of meaning and purpose in a postmodern world.
