Gen Z is Shaping the Next Generation of the Internet, and Fast. This tech-savvy generation has faced numerous challenges in the transition, particularly in the areas of productivity, boredom, mental health, and skill development. With the rise of remote work, only a small percentage of Gen Z individuals claim to have no challenges and actually enjoy working from home.

One of the key aspects that Gen Z values in the digital realm is the ability to be in the moment. They appreciate the excitement and spontaneity that comes with being connected to others online. The COVID-19 pandemic has reminded us all of the importance of these elements of humanity in feeling connected to one another.

Gen Z is highly engaged with social media and follows multiple influencers. According to the Center for Generation Kinetics, 45% of Gen Z follows more than ten influencers, with 10% following 50 or more. This generation has become more connected to specific niches and has direct channels of communication with their audience. This has led to the blurring of lines between commerce and creator, as brands find new ways to reach audiences and influence purchasing decisions.

Unlike previous generations, Gen Z defines value and assets differently. They are less motivated by material acquisition and associate the accumulation of physical items with greed. The majority of Gen Z individuals feel uneasy and intimidated by the stock market, but they find comfort in gaming, the virtual world, and the concept of investing time rather than money. Digital assets provide choices, flexibility, and align with Gen Z's values. This has paved the way for a new path, where managing highly individualized portfolios of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) will disrupt traditional careers, retirement, and income.

However, this shift to a more digital-focused lifestyle has also taken a toll on Gen Z's mental health. A significant portion, 35%, feels that their mental health has worsened since the shift, and 29% find maintaining relationships to be the most challenging aspect of isolation. As physical locations become less important, Gen Z will exercise their freedom through digital communities, new experiments in co-living, and content-oriented houses. They will seek playful, casual, and gamified ways of meeting new people, moving away from the traditional social media model.

On the technical side, tracking unique users has become crucial for companies like Amplitude. Amplitude employs a system of three different IDs to track users: device ID, user ID, and Amplitude ID. The device ID is a randomly-generated UUID that persists unless a user clears their browser cookies or browses in private mode. The user ID, on the other hand, is set by the user and should remain constant to ensure accurate tracking. Amplitude solves the merged user problem, where an anonymous user with only a device ID is recognized as a known user, by cross-referencing the list of Amplitude IDs with an internal mapping of merged IDs. However, user IDs cannot be merged, so if a new user ID is created for an existing user, Amplitude will consider them as separate unique users.

In conclusion, Gen Z is rapidly shaping the future of the internet, bringing with them unique values, challenges, and preferences. As this generation continues to redefine the concept of value and assets, we can expect a shift towards digital ownership and investment. To navigate this new landscape successfully, here are three actionable pieces of advice:

  1. Embrace the spontaneity and excitement of the digital world: Gen Z appreciates being in the moment and values authentic connections. Brands should focus on creating live and interactive experiences to engage with this generation effectively.

  2. Prioritize mental health and relationship-building: As Gen Z faces increased challenges in maintaining mental well-being and relationships, companies should invest in tools and resources that support their emotional needs. Building authentic and meaningful connections with Gen Z will be key to success.

  3. Adapt tracking methods to ensure accurate user identification: With the rise of digital platforms and the need to track unique users, companies should implement robust tracking systems like Amplitude's to avoid the merged user problem. Consistent and accurate user identification is essential for effective data analysis and personalized experiences.

By recognizing and understanding the unique characteristics of Gen Z, businesses can thrive in this rapidly evolving digital landscape. The internet is being shaped by this generation, and it's crucial to adapt and cater to their needs and preferences to stay relevant.
