Motivation is Overvalued. Environment Often Matters More.
In the pursuit of success, we often attribute our achievements to our own motivation and talent. We believe that our habits and actions are a direct result of our personal characteristics. However, when we examine how human behavior has been shaped over time, we discover that motivation and talent are often overvalued. In many cases, the environment matters more.
An interesting example of this phenomenon can be seen in the spread of agriculture around the globe. Farmers had an easier time expanding along east-west routes than along north-south ones. As a result, agriculture spread two to three times faster across Asia and Europe than it did up and down the Americas. This highlights the significant impact that the environment can have on our ability to succeed.
If we want to maximize our odds of success, we need to operate in an environment that accelerates our results rather than hinders them. One way to do this is by automating good decisions. By designing an environment that makes good decisions for us, we can increase the likelihood of consistently engaging in positive behaviors. People who seem to effortlessly stick to good habits often benefit from an environment that makes those behaviors easier.
Another aspect of our environment that can significantly influence our success is the tools and methods we use. In the field of digital design, there has been a lack of consensus on what comprises a "good enough" foundational education. Furthermore, ineffective methods and outdated tools are often not retired, leading to limited and inaccurate user experiences. Designers often find it difficult to let go of established tools and methods, fearing that it questions their expertise. However, in order to truly innovate and create impactful designs, it is important to be open to exploring new approaches and letting go of outdated ones.
Seniority levels within design teams are also often meaningless. It is not necessarily the years of experience that determine the effectiveness of a designer, but rather their ability to adapt to new challenges and think creatively. The desire to explore and fail has been lost in the design industry. We have become risk-averse, fearing the consequences of making mistakes. However, true innovation often comes from embracing failure and learning from it.
In addition, we tend to give well-known design leaders too much power in shaping the discourse and practices of design. As creatives responsible for mass communication, we have the power to make a significant impact on how information is interpreted and how brands and products are consumed. It is important to actively challenge and question the ideas put forth by design leaders, ensuring that we are creating inclusive and accessible designs that truly cater to the needs of all users.
To conclude, while motivation and talent are important factors in achieving success, the environment in which we operate often matters more. By designing an environment that supports and accelerates our goals, automating good decisions, and being open to new approaches and failures, we can increase our odds of success. Let us not underestimate the power of our environment in shaping our behaviors and outcomes. It is time to prioritize creating environments that empower us to reach our full potential.
