However, we must acknowledge that the way people interact with systems has changed. Linear flows no longer represent the reality of consumer settings or enterprise environments.
Deliverables are not the work itself; they are merely evidence of the work. Designers must shift their focus from creating visually appealing artifacts to developing insights that drive meaningful experiences. Pretty maps that tell a surface-level story of limited user paths are no longer sufficient. We need to create down-to-earth versions that allow us to work through important insights.
Another issue we face is the meaningless hierarchy within design teams. Seniority levels often do not reflect actual expertise or leadership qualities. Instead of valuing experience, we should focus on fostering collaboration and diverse perspectives within design teams. Each individual brings unique skills and insights that can contribute to the success of a project.
Furthermore, our fear of failure hinders our ability to explore new ideas. We have lost the safety net that once allowed us to take risks and learn from our mistakes. Without the freedom to fail, we limit our potential for innovation and growth. It is essential to create an environment that encourages experimentation and provides support when things don't go as planned.
Additionally, we must challenge the influence and power of well-known design leaders. While they may have valuable insights and experiences, we should not blindly follow their dictates. As creatives responsible for mass communication, we have the power to shape how information is interpreted, how brands are consumed, and how people experience the world. It is important to question established norms and seek alternative perspectives.
