The user ID, on the other hand, is set by the user and represents a currently-existing user. Changing the user ID will result in Amplitude recognizing it as a separate user. The challenge arises when Amplitude identifies an anonymous user as a recognized user with an Amplitude ID. To solve this, Amplitude cross-references the list of Amplitude IDs with an internal mapping of merged IDs. While device and Amplitude IDs can be merged, user IDs cannot.
