In today's digital age, automation has become a key aspect of our lives, enhancing efficiency in various tasks. However, when it comes to certain activities like capturing reading notes, automation may not always be the most effective approach. This realization led me to explore a new and better way of capturing my reading notes in Obsidian, a note-taking tool. In this article, I will discuss the benefits of manual note-taking and the significance of cultural identity in a postmodern society.

When I initially automated my reading notes, I found it to be a convenient and efficient process. However, I soon realized that the automation made my notes feel distant and detached. I rarely reviewed them and often missed out on important insights. This led me to adopt a more manual approach to note-taking.

My new method involves three steps. Firstly, I read the book and mark it up as I go along. This allows me to engage with the content and filter what truly matters to me. Secondly, I create a source note for the book, acting as a map of content (MOC) specific to that book. This helps me organize my thoughts and connect the dots within the book. Thirdly, I review the notes I took and decide which ones are worth capturing as separate linked notes, which ones should be included in the source MOC, and which ones can be ignored.

By waiting until I finish the book to create my notes, I have discovered that some passages I initially marked are not actually worth capturing. Our notes are influenced by the context in which we read, and as we progress through a book, our understanding evolves. This means that some notes or underlines may need to be updated or upgraded as we approach the end of the book.

Upon completing a book, I undertake a few additional tasks. I update my Goodreads account and my personal list of books I've read since 1996. Then, I revisit the book and review the flags I've left. If a note no longer seems worth keeping or recording, I remove the flag. However, the underlined passages and notes still remain. The flags serve as markers for the notes I want to capture in Obsidian.

In Obsidian, I have a dedicated "Reading" folder with two sub-folders: Sources and Commonplace. Source notes are stored in the Sources folder, and I have created a template to ensure consistency in formatting and content. Once I have the source note and have narrowed down the flags to the ones I want to keep, I begin manually adding my notes to Obsidian. This process allows me to truly absorb and connect with my notes, enhancing my understanding of the material.
