The Contradictions in the Used Car Sales Industry and the Sensibility of Gulliver Founder Kaneshi Hatonotori | Ken Kusunoki | Ten Minutes TV

In every industry, there are contradictions that insiders tend to turn a blind eye to. However, it is those who can confront these contradictions head-on that possess true sensibility. It is from these contradictions that excellent strategies are born.

When it comes to accepting new ideas, the correct approach is to view them as challenges to our imagination. Instead of simply lowering the bar, we should completely reverse our polarity. In other words, rather than listing reasons why an idea won't work, we should identify reasons why it will work. This is what I do when I meet someone with a new idea. There are deeper reasons behind why people dismiss new ideas. When we see someone embarking on an ambitious project, whether consciously or unconsciously, we expect them to fail. After all, if they succeed in their ambitious endeavor, they will surpass us. It is not the "humble" individuals who do great work. For example, the first thing a professor should do, regardless of the topic, is to slightly exaggerate the importance of that topic and their own significance within it. As Hardy said, a little overconfidence can also be beneficial. In many fields, I have noticed that the most successful people are slightly overconfident.

Another way to navigate the awkward stages of an ambitious project is to surround oneself with the right people. Create a counterflow against the headwinds of society. However, it's not enough to simply gather people who encourage you. That will only lead to discounting their encouragement. You need colleagues who will candidly tell you if your ugly duckling project is indeed ugly. Learning about the history of the great works created by those who came before us can also be helpful. What were they thinking during their early days? What did they do first? It is often difficult to find the answers to these questions because people feel embarrassed about their initial works and are reluctant to share them. (Even they made mistakes in their judgments.) However, if we can clearly see the initial stages of the path that led to someone's great work, we may be surprised at how weak and vulnerable it was.

In conclusion, the used car sales industry, like any other industry, has its contradictions. Only those with the sensibility to confront these contradictions can develop excellent strategies. To succeed in any endeavor, it is important to embrace new ideas by challenging our imagination, surround ourselves with the right people who can offer honest feedback, and learn from the history of those who achieved greatness before us. By following these actionable pieces of advice, we can navigate the challenges and contradictions of our chosen fields and reach new heights of success.
