For example, an Ethereum base-layer ERC20 token transfer costs around 45,000 gas, while an ERC20 token transfer in a rollup takes up just 16 bytes of on-chain space and costs under 300 gas. This compression allows for a scaling factor of over 100x for most applications. Additionally, rollups can achieve high transaction throughput. For instance, a rollup for ETH transfers can contain up to 62,500 transactions, resulting in a potential throughput of around 4,807 transactions per second. These scalability and efficiency gains make rollups an attractive solution for Ethereum scaling.

The Role of Eth2 Data Sharding

While rollups offer significant scalability improvements, there may still be a need for additional scaling solutions, especially for high-demand use cases. Eth2 data sharding provides a potential solution to this problem. By allocating a space of 16 MB every 12 seconds for rollup data, Eth2 data sharding allows for even greater scalability. This additional space can be filled with any data, and the system guarantees consensus on its availability. By leveraging Eth2 data sharding, rollups can further enhance their scalability and accommodate a wide range of applications.
