AI and Bitcoin: The Future of Knowledge and Currency

Innovation and progress have always been driven by the accumulation of knowledge over generations. Each successive generation builds upon the wisdom of those who came before them, pushing the frontier of knowledge further out. However, this burden of knowledge is slowing down innovation, as it takes longer for individuals to reach the frontier and make groundbreaking inventions.

This is where artificial intelligence (AI) comes in. Unlike humans, AI does not suffer from the burden of knowledge. It does not die or degrade, but instead continuously improves and accumulates knowledge. As AI accelerates past us, it will acquire knowledge that we cannot comprehend. We are trying to tunnel through the mountain of knowledge, but AI will be fully loosed in it, leaving an ever-expanding gap between us and the technology.

But what does this mean for humans? Will we become secondary creatures, incapable of understanding the world we live in? Just as a toad cannot grasp Archimedes' principle, we may find ourselves benefiting from the advancements of AI without truly understanding how they came to be. We may become like happy, wall-licking shih-tzus enjoying the benefits of technology without comprehending its inner workings.

The same can be said for the evolution of currency. Money is simply a belief held by a lot of people, a collective trance. In the past, hierarchical structures with an alpha King on top issued currencies that people believed in. The stability and predictability of these hierarchies, along with their ability to enforce behavior through violence and taxation, gave value to their currencies.

However, Bitcoin has disrupted this system by introducing a decentralized network. Decentralized cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin are based on four defensibilities: network effects, brand, scale, and embedding. Network effects are the most significant of these, as they create a belief system around the currency. The more people believe in Bitcoin, the more valuable it becomes.

Bitcoin's future will be determined by the strength of its network effects. The network gravity will prevail, even if governments try to ban it. The belief in Bitcoin is what gives it value, and humans, as pack animals, want to be part of the "in group" and share common beliefs. A Protocol Network Effect arises when a computational standard is declared and all nodes can connect to the network using that protocol. The more nodes that connect, the stronger the network effect becomes.

However, Bitcoin faces challenges in terms of its proof-of-work system. Competing protocols like Tezos, Solana, Cardano, and Ethereum, which use proof-of-stake, offer faster transactions and lower costs. If Bitcoin cannot adapt and move away from proof-of-work, it may struggle to maintain its position in the ecosystem.

Additionally, the value of Bitcoin is influenced by its brand and market cap. Bitcoin's worldwide brand and large market cap create a bandwagon effect, where people are more likely to stick with what is familiar and established. This creates switching costs and makes it difficult for lesser-known crypto brands to compete.

As the network grows, the scalability of Bitcoin becomes a concern. More transactions and more miners competing to validate transactions can slow down the system and increase costs. The Bitcoin community needs to come together to make necessary changes and alleviate these scalability issues.

In conclusion, both AI and Bitcoin are reshaping the future of knowledge and currency. AI's ability to continuously improve and accumulate knowledge raises questions about our role as humans in a world where technology surpasses our understanding. On the other hand, Bitcoin's decentralized network and network effects challenge the traditional hierarchical structures of currency and create a new belief system.

To adapt to this changing landscape, here are three actionable pieces of advice:

  1. Embrace AI as a tool for innovation: Instead of fearing AI's potential to surpass human knowledge, embrace it as a tool for innovation. Use AI to augment your own abilities and work alongside it to push the boundaries of knowledge further.

  2. Stay informed and adapt to the evolving cryptocurrency landscape: Keep up with the developments in the cryptocurrency world, especially in terms of network effects, scalability, and brand. Stay informed about different protocols and their advantages to make informed decisions about your involvement in the crypto ecosystem.

  3. Foster a mindset of continuous learning: In a world where knowledge is constantly expanding, it is crucial to foster a mindset of continuous learning. Stay curious, seek out new information, and adapt to the changing landscape of knowledge and currency.

By embracing these actions, we can navigate the evolving landscape of knowledge and currency and ensure that we remain active participants in shaping the future.
