The Burden of Knowledge and the Rise of Artificial Intelligence
Introduction:
As human beings continue to expand the boundaries of knowledge, the burden of acquiring and passing on this knowledge grows exponentially. Economist Benjamin Jones argues that this burden of knowledge is impeding innovation, as great inventors now have less time to dedicate to their work. However, artificial intelligence (AI) presents a unique perspective on this issue. Unlike humans, AI does not suffer from the burden of knowledge, as it continuously improves without the constraints of time and degradation. This raises important questions about the future of AI and its relationship with human progress.
The Mountain of Knowledge:
Humans are the only species that actively pass down significant knowledge from one generation to another, enabling us to build upon the wisdom of previous ages and innovate further. This process of standing on the shoulders of giants is the essence of human progress. However, AI does not face the same limitations. It accumulates knowledge at an exponential rate, surpassing our comprehension. The mountain of knowledge we strive to tunnel through seems endless, and as AI accelerates past us, the gap between our understanding and its accumulation of knowledge widens.
The Generational Progress:
Unlike animals, which learn the same biological lessons repeatedly, humans have an inherent drive for knowledge and advancement. Generation after generation, we tunnel deeper into the mountain of knowledge, learning and evolving. However, the time it takes for individuals to reach the frontier of knowledge is increasing. Economist Benjamin Jones's research shows that the age at which notable inventions occur has significantly risen over the years. This delay in reaching the rockface of innovation reduces the time available for individuals to contribute to progress.
The Encephalon's Acceleration:
AI, often referred to as the Encephalon, operates without the limitations of mortality or degradation. As our efforts to reach the frontier of knowledge slow down, AI's ability to acquire and apply knowledge accelerates. In computing terms, AI is not constrained by hardware limitations like animals or humans. Therefore, there is a possibility that we may become secondary creatures, unable to comprehend the advancements and benefits brought forth by AI. We may become like contented pets, benefiting from the wonders of AI without truly understanding how they came to be.
