Optimistic rollups use fraud proofs to ensure the validity of transactions, while ZK rollups use cryptographic proofs called ZK-SNARKs. ZK rollups, although mathematically complex, have the potential to be the superior solution as ZK-SNARK technology continues to improve.

The scalability of rollups is impressive. An Ethereum transaction typically requires around 110 bytes, whereas an ETH transfer on a rollup can be as low as 12 bytes. The use of compression techniques further enhances the scaling factor, making rollups capable of processing over 100 times more transactions than the base-layer Ethereum.

However, there are challenges to overcome. One challenge is the risk of multiple participants generating and attempting to submit batches in parallel, resulting in wasted effort and gas. To address this, the proposed eth2 data sharding opens up a space for rollups to utilize and achieve even higher transaction throughput.
