"The Art of Finding the Right Investors for Startup Success"

Starting a business requires careful planning and strategic decision-making, especially when it comes to marketing. In the early stages, it's crucial to answer three key questions: Who is your target audience? Where can you find them? How can you engage them? Without clear answers to these questions, your marketing efforts may fall flat.

One mistake we made when growing KISSmetrics was not having a clear picture of our target customer. We had a general audience in mind, but we needed to be more specific in order to determine the best marketing channel. Building a business based on assumptions is a recipe for failure, and our assumptions were not specific enough. We needed to identify a place of opportunity where we could listen, learn, and provide value.

Enter content marketing. Our goal with KISSmetrics was to provide actionable metrics, so our marketing had to be valuable for marketers. We wanted to give value, ideally for free, and engage potential customers in a meaningful way. Scalability was also a priority for us. If we wanted our business to grow, our marketing had to be scalable as well. We found the perfect platform for our needs: Twitter.

Back in 2008, Twitter was still in its early stages, but hashtags were gaining popularity. We discovered that by using hashtags like WeFollow and measure, we could easily gain new followers who were marketers. Sharing other marketers' content allowed us to spread goodwill, promote valuable content, and build our own Twitter audience. Gradually, our Twitter following grew, and we started seeing a significant increase in referral traffic to our website.

The lesson here is to identify underused opportunities in the platforms you choose. What worked for us on Twitter in 2008 may not work today, but the principle remains the same. Look for emergent trends and tactics within your chosen platforms to engage with your target audience. Think outside the box and find creative ways to reach your customers.

Another important aspect of successful marketing is focusing on the users that truly matter. Not every follower or customer will be valuable to your business. Identify the ones who want to engage with you and provide value to them. Don't waste your time on those who are not genuinely interested in what you have to offer.

When it comes to finding investors for your startup, the same principles apply. You don't need a long list of investors; you only need two who truly understand your vision and can help you achieve your goals. These investors are more like team members, one for product-market fit (PMF) and one for scaling.

Finding PMF is all about user empathy, creativity, and experimentation. It's about understanding your target audience and finding the right solution to their problem. Once you've achieved PMF, your focus shifts to scaling. This is where your second investor comes in. Look for someone who has a track record of helping companies scale successfully. The more experience they have, the better equipped they will be to guide you through the process.

When seeking investors, don't get caught up in the prestige of a firm. The partner who leads your deal is what truly matters. They will be the one providing the majority of value and support, so choose your partner wisely. Research venture investors on platforms like Twitter, Clubhouse, and Medium. Show up consistently and demonstrate your passion and dedication to your business.

In conclusion, successful marketing and finding the right investors require careful consideration and a strategic approach. To achieve marketing success, identify your target audience, find the right platforms, and provide value. When it comes to investors, focus on finding two who can support you in achieving PMF and scaling. Show up consistently and demonstrate your commitment to your business. Remember, it's not about the quantity of investors, but the quality of the partnership.
