"Why We Created the Yelp Elite Squad: The Power of Authentic Reviews and Habit-Forming Products"

One question kept coming up: “Why would I ever want to write a review?” This grew into the million dollar question. How could we build Yelp’s foundation of real and authentic reviews and opinions — from actual everyday people — without paying them? For people to get behind something, they have to believe in it as if it was their own creation.

Yelp had to stand for something, and just as importantly, it had to stand against something. Like we said: real people, real reviews. In order to be truly authentic, money could not sway the incentive. Bringing humanity to Yelp would become the secret sauce of Yelp’s slow-growth engine.

Yelpers interacting in real life (IRL) would pump up each other’s tastes and insights. In the early stages of each city Yelp launched into, we wanted to emphasize a sense of belonging and purpose that was qualitative and not necessarily quantifiable. In the beginning, our goal was to identify the heavy lifters on Yelp as the tastemakers in San Francisco. Our theory was that we’d be better off finding and nurturing 100 super reviewers than 1000 average ones. These Elites had to feel like royalty, or mayors in a more city-centric sense. We wanted to convey that great businesses were built by the people, for the people. And the place for that to happen was Yelp. By adding faces to fellow members and the businesses themselves, we were building loyalty and connectivity.

On the other hand, the Hooked model helps build habit-forming products that prompt users to return and use those products over and over again, without depending on costly advertising or aggressive messaging. The loop consists of four components: triggers, action, variable reward, and investment. Triggers can be external or internal, and they are what get the user to the product. The action is the simplest behavior in anticipation of a reward. The variable reward is fulfilling, yet leaves the user wanting more. Finally, the investment refers to the "bit of work" done to increase the likelihood of returning.

It’s important to note that a behavior only happens when there is motivation, ability, and a trigger. If you’re missing one, it won’t happen. This is where the Yelp Elite Squad and the Hooked model intersect. The Elite Squad serves as both a trigger and an investment for users. By becoming an Elite member, users feel a sense of belonging and purpose, which motivates them to engage with the platform more frequently. The Elite status itself becomes a reward, fulfilling the user's desire for recognition and status.

Furthermore, the Elite Squad creates a community of like-minded individuals who can interact and share their experiences, enhancing the social aspect of Yelp. This sense of community and connectivity adds to the habit-forming nature of the platform. Through the Hooked model, Yelp leverages triggers, actions, variable rewards, and investments to keep users coming back, ultimately building a habit of using Yelp for reviews and recommendations.

So, how can businesses apply these principles to their own products or platforms? Here are three actionable advice:

  1. Prioritize authenticity: Just like Yelp, businesses should strive for authenticity in their reviews and feedback. Genuine and honest opinions from real users build trust and credibility. Find ways to incentivize users to provide authentic reviews without relying on monetary rewards.

  2. Foster a sense of community: Building a community around your product or platform can significantly enhance user engagement and retention. Encourage users to interact with each other, share experiences, and support one another. This sense of belonging can create a habit-forming environment that keeps users coming back.

  3. Understand user motivations and triggers: Take the time to understand what motivates your users and identify the triggers that prompt them to engage with your product. By aligning your offering with their desires and needs, you can create a compelling user experience that encourages repeat usage.

In conclusion, the Yelp Elite Squad and the Hooked model demonstrate the power of authentic reviews and habit-forming products. By prioritizing authenticity, fostering a sense of community, and understanding user motivations and triggers, businesses can create a loyal user base that keeps coming back. Whether it's through building a community of tastemakers or leveraging the four components of the Hooked model, the key lies in creating an experience that users believe in and want to be a part of.
