In 2022, social media and technology have become integral parts of teenagers' lives. The Pew Research Center's survey reveals that TikTok has gained immense popularity, with 67% of teens using the platform and 16% using it almost constantly. Interestingly, Facebook, which once dominated the teen social media landscape, has seen a significant decline in usage, dropping from 71% in 2014-15 to just 32% today. However, YouTube remains the preferred platform, with a staggering 95% of teens utilizing it. Twitter and Tumblr, on the other hand, have experienced declining usage among teens.

Gender differences also play a role in teen social media preferences. Teen boys tend to gravitate towards YouTube, Twitch, and Reddit, while teen girls are more likely to use TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat. The survey reveals that 19% of teens use YouTube almost constantly, followed closely by TikTok at 16% and Snapchat at 15%. Despite concerns about excessive screen time, a majority of U.S. teens (55%) believe they spend an appropriate amount of time on these platforms, while 36% feel they spend too much time on social media.

While social media provides a platform for connection and self-expression, it is essential for teenagers to seek personal growth beyond these platforms. This is where the concept of a "commonplace book" comes into play. A commonplace book is a repository for ideas, quotes, anecdotes, and observations that one comes across during their life and intellectual pursuits. Throughout history, many influential individuals have maintained commonplace books to cultivate their minds and deepen their understanding of the world.

One of the most notable examples is Marcus Aurelius, whose commonplace book became the basis for his famous work, "Meditations." Petrarch, too, kept a commonplace book, recognizing the value of collecting and reflecting on wisdom. The purpose of a commonplace book is to capture the most impactful teachings and sayings that can be immediately applied to one's life. The act of reading widely and taking notes is crucial to this process. Annotation, or "marginalia," allows readers to engage with the material, fostering a deeper connection with the author and the text.

The commonplace book is not limited to written material. Movies, speeches, videos, and even conversations can be sources of inspiration. It is a personal tool that allows individuals to curate their own learning priorities and filter out irrelevant information. The ability to rearrange and group the collected ideas is vital in extracting the most value from them. Notably, former President Ronald Reagan used a similar notecard system to organize his quotes, highlighting the effectiveness of this approach.
