A Comprehensive Survey of Product Management: Insights and Actionable Advice
In the world of product management, there are certain skills and qualities that are highly valued. Through a comprehensive survey, it has been found that communication, execution, and product sense are the most frequently valued attributes in this field. On the other hand, design/UX, empathy, and raw intelligence are the least frequently valued qualities. These findings shed light on the expectations and priorities of companies when it comes to their product management teams.
When we delve deeper into the survey results, we discover that product managers (PMs) have more influence than professionals in other functions in only 70% of the companies surveyed. This percentage falls short of the 80% mark observed in other domains. The spectrum of PM influence varies greatly across different companies. For instance, at Zynga, PMs are the driving force behind decision-making and have significant control. Conversely, at Apple, PMs have the least influence, suggesting a different organizational structure and decision-making process.
These findings prompt us to reflect on the importance of the three most frequently valued qualities: communication, execution, and product sense. Effective communication is crucial for a product manager to convey ideas, goals, and strategies to various stakeholders, including engineers, designers, and executives. It facilitates collaboration and ensures that everyone is on the same page. Furthermore, strong communication skills enable PMs to gather feedback, understand user needs, and relay them to the development team.
Execution is another key attribute that sets successful product managers apart. It involves the ability to translate ideas and plans into actionable steps, ensuring that projects are completed on time and within budget. PMs with excellent execution skills possess a strong sense of organization, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively. They are adept at managing resources, mitigating risks, and driving projects to successful completion.
Product sense, the third frequently valued quality, encompasses a deep understanding of the product, market, and target audience. PMs with product sense have a keen intuition for identifying user needs and pain points. They are able to envision innovative solutions and make strategic decisions that align with the product's vision and goals. This quality allows PMs to steer the product in the right direction, ensuring its success in the market.
While the aforementioned qualities are highly valued, it is equally important to recognize the least frequently valued attributes: design/UX, empathy, and raw intelligence. This does not imply that these qualities are irrelevant or unnecessary in product management. Instead, it highlights a gap in how companies prioritize these attributes compared to others. Design/UX, for instance, plays a critical role in creating user-friendly and visually appealing products. Empathy enables PMs to understand user needs and desires on a deeper level, resulting in more intuitive and personalized experiences. Raw intelligence contributes to problem-solving, critical thinking, and making informed decisions.
