Building the Global Knowledge Graph: Dreaming the Dream for Roam Research
Roam Research, a project known as the "dream" for many, aims to connect everyone's learning and make it accessible. The goal is to create a global knowledge graph that allows users to form relationships between their thoughts and ideas. Co-founder Conor White-Sullivan describes Roam as a "thinking" interface that resonates with users, becoming their default choice. This meaningful usage of Roam leads to the creation of relationships as users engage in the process of thinking.
In Roam, instead of working with traditional worksheets like in Excel, users work with graphs. Graphs are the collection of pages and bullets within an account. The concept of referenceable pieces of data is applied to each bullet point or block in Roam. This means that users can assign a unique identifier to each thought they have, transforming unstructured data into structured data. Roam not only organizes information but also allows users to remix each other's public notes, fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing.
The grand vision for Roam goes beyond organizing personal information. It aims to organize all information, a monumental task considering the vast amount of data available on the internet. One of the challenges in achieving this vision is the ingestion point. Google search can only access publicly available information on websites, which is just a fraction of the knowledge that exists. Scientists and researchers often have half-formed ideas in their heads, and much of the knowledge they possess is stored in databases on their computers, inaccessible to the wider public. Roam seeks to bridge this gap and make all knowledge accessible and shareable.
The concept of cumulative advantage, also known as the Matthew effect, plays a significant role in determining long-term outcomes. Winners often keep winning, and those who start with an advantage tend to retain that advantage over time. The Matthew effect highlights the importance of initial conditions and how they can have a lasting impact on one's success. This idea is demonstrated through various experiments, where individuals who begin with a slight advantage end up with a significantly larger market share. However, it is crucial to note that luck plays a significant role in these outcomes. With a 20% initial advantage, the final result is drastically different.
Understanding the role of luck in our lives can be empowering. Accepting that luck is a primary determinant of success allows us to let go of judgment based on outcomes and focus on our efforts instead. Effort is something we can control, and by redirecting our energy towards our actions, we can make progress regardless of our starting conditions. It is essential to remember that while some individuals may have more advantages than others, it should never define our level of effort or determination.
