Building the Global Knowledge Graph: Dreaming the Dream for Roam Research - RoamBrain.com
The concept of the global knowledge graph is an ambitious one. It aims to connect everyone's learning and make it accessible to all. This is precisely what Roam Research is striving to achieve with their innovative platform. Roam has created an interface that resonates with users, becoming their default "thinking" interface. This leads to more meaningful usage that is creating relationships right in the process of thinking.
Co-founder Conor White-Sullivan has compared Roam to Excel, highlighting how both products have "a low floor and a high ceiling." In Roam, instead of worksheets, we work with graphs. These graphs are the collection of pages and bullets across a specific account. Roam takes the concept of referenceable pieces of data and applies it to each bullet point or block. With Roam, you can assign a unique identifier (e.g., a block reference) to every thought you have. This turns unstructured data, such as random ideas in a text string, into structured data.
Roam was built with a grander vision of allowing users not just to read each other's public notes but also to remix them. This aligns with Cunningham's Law, which states, "The best way to get the right answer on the Internet is not to ask a question; it's to post the wrong answer." This notion of learning in public is fundamental to Roam's vision.
However, the vision for Roam isn't limited to organizing individual information. The grand vision is to organize all information. One challenge in achieving this is the ingestion point. Google search can only access what people have put on a website and made public. But what about the vast amount of knowledge that resides in scientists' minds? Often, they have half-formed ideas that they try to communicate over the web. However, much of the state of knowledge of the human race is currently locked away in databases, sitting on individual computers, and not shared with the world.
To create a global knowledge graph, we need to bridge this gap between what is publicly available and what remains hidden. Roam has already taken significant steps in this direction by allowing users to connect and remix each other's notes. But there is still much work to be done to fully realize the vision of organizing all information.
Now, let's shift our focus to the power of the underdog. We often associate underdog expectations with a disadvantage. However, research suggests that these expectations can actually be a great motivator. The need to prove others wrong can drive individuals to excel and surpass expectations.
