Then, in 1964, time-sharing revolutionized the UI landscape with command-based interaction. Users and computers took turns communicating through individual commands, allowing for a more dynamic and iterative approach. This paradigm offered users the ability to reassess and modify their commands after each execution, enabling progress towards their desired goals.
For the past four decades, the graphical user interface (GUI) has reigned supreme, dominating the user experience (UX) realm since the launch of the Macintosh in 1984. However, the rise of AI systems such as ChatGPT is ushering in a new era of UI technology and a shift towards the next UI paradigm. These AI systems represent the third UI paradigm, known as intent-based outcome specification. Instead of telling the computer what to do, users now communicate the desired outcome. The AI system then interprets these intentions and takes the necessary steps to deliver the desired results.
While this new UI paradigm shows immense promise, it is crucial to consider its usability and accessibility. The current chat-based interaction style requires users to articulate their problems in prose text, which poses challenges for individuals who struggle with articulation. Recent literacy research suggests that a significant portion of the population may not possess the necessary communication skills to effectively utilize current AI bots. It becomes clear that improving the usability of AI should be a priority, as better usability translates into a significant competitive advantage.
Additionally, it is important to note that the second UI paradigm, command-based interaction, will not fade into oblivion. Clicking or tapping on a screen remains an intuitive and essential aspect of user interaction. Therefore, the future of UI is likely to feature a hybrid interface that combines elements of both intent-based and command-based approaches. This hybrid UI will retain many GUI elements while embracing the intent-based outcome specification of AI systems.
