TikTok: The Power of Algorithms and Cultural Ignorance
In the world of advertising and brand messages, trust is a key factor that can make or break a campaign. In a 2013 survey conducted by Nielsen across 58 countries, it was found that word-of-mouth recommendations from friends and family were the most influential source of advertising, with 84 percent of global respondents considering it the most trustworthy. This highlights the importance of building a strong network of loyal customers who can vouch for your brand.
But what happens when a social network like TikTok comes along, disrupting the traditional advertising landscape with its powerful algorithm? Bytedance, the parent company of TikTok, introduced the updated For You Page feed algorithm, which has proven to be the most important piece of technology for the platform. This algorithm serves as a rapid and efficient market maker, connecting videos with the audiences they are destined to delight. What makes it even more impressive is its ability to overcome cultural barriers and create a personalized experience for users.
In the past, cultural differences have posed challenges for companies trying to expand into new markets. America, for example, has been almost impenetrable to Chinese companies due to what can be considered as America's cultural firewall. However, the machine learning algorithm used by TikTok has proved to be significantly responsive and accurate, allowing it to pierce the veil of cultural ignorance. This has been a game-changer for Bytedance, enabling them to achieve a hockey-stick inflection among their target market.
To jumpstart TikTok's growth, Bytedance took two key steps. First, they opened up their wallet and started spending on user acquisition in the U.S. This move was met with skepticism, as rumors circulated about the low 30-day retention rate of the new users. However, after integrating the popular app Musical.ly into TikTok and utilizing Bytedance's algorithm, the time spent in the app doubled. This highlights the importance of not only bringing new users into the app but also providing them with ways to find each other quickly and branch off into their own spaces.
TikTok's success can be attributed to its unique approach to building a network. Unlike other social networks that rely on social graphs, TikTok focuses on an interest graph. While social graphs approximate an interest graph by connecting users based on their relationships, TikTok's algorithm assembles an interest graph without imposing a burden on the user. This passive personalization, learning through consumption, has allowed TikTok to bypass the negative network effects associated with social graphs.
