The Importance of Visual Design in Creating a Great User Experience
In the world of design, there is an undeniable connection between aesthetics and human psychology. Humans are naturally attracted to things and people they find aesthetically pleasing. In fact, studies have shown that both adults and children are more likely to trust someone they find attractive. But what exactly makes something beautiful? Is it a universal concept or merely subjective?
Various theories have attempted to explain beauty. Some argue that beauty is a manifestation of harmonious, mathematical relations such as the golden section. Others, like Voltaire, believe that beauty is impossible to define, giving rise to the statement "beauty is in the eye of the beholder." It is also suggested that beauty comes from societal and cultural attitudes.
Visual design plays a crucial role in user experience (UX) by engaging users and drawing their attention to the correct functionality. It prioritizes tasks on a page through size, color, and the use of whitespace. Moreover, visual design can enhance brand trust by utilizing visual cues. In essence, visual design incorporates static images and visuals to improve communication and usability.
One of the key aspects of visual design is creating an attractive visual hierarchy. When a design is visually appealing, users are more likely to trust it and give it a second chance. However, it is important to note that consistency is paramount. Inconsistency can turn even the most beautiful design into an ugly mess. If a user is confused by the site, it will appear ugly in their eyes.
On the other hand, crafting the first mile of a product is equally important in creating a great user experience. In the first 15 seconds, users are lazy, vain, and selfish. They have no extra time to invest in something they don't know, they want to look good quickly using the product, and they want to know what will immediately benefit them. Therefore, it is crucial to provide immediate novelty or utility to engage new users.
Explaining a product to new users is often ineffective. Users don't want to make choices, especially in the first mile of their experience. The key is to use familiar terms and solutions that are effective rather than being overly creative. The first mile of a user's experience should not be an afterthought but the most thought-out part of a product. Allocating a significant amount of energy to the first mile is essential for products with aggressive growth aspirations.
Even if the user experience for existing users is performing well, it is important not to neglect engaging new users. New types of users are the real source of growth for any product. Focusing solely on power users can lead to a decline in attracting new users. Established products often take their large user bases for granted and fail to maintain simplicity over time. This presents an opportunity for startups to prioritize simplicity and engage new users.
